More often than not, my favorite blogs suck me in with seemingly endless scrolls of beautiful pictures. This blog is one of those. And it all began with one girl’s obsession with a certain shade of blue.
Erin Olson created The House of Turquoise as a way to compile photos featuring shades of her favorite color. Next, she developed Everything Turquoise, a product blog, so that her readers could buy her fabulous finds. (These sassy, suede shoes and this $249 accent chair are my fave recent entries.) Erin expanded into more color shopping blogs and now manages 11 websites. Find them all at Décor By Color.com. What started as a hobby became an obsession which turned into a full-time job.
“Working from home, doing something I love, is absolutely a dream come true for me,” Erin says. ”I do not have a background in design, only an interest in decorating, so I guess my passion and eye for it just comes naturally.” Erin’s father is an architect, and she thinks that might have something to do with it. She was taken with the color turquoise at age 12 with the inception of the Florida Marlins. “I didn’t follow baseball at all but saw their turquoise hats and knew there was just something about that color that I loved.”
”I think turquoise is special because it has a lot of moods/shades and can be used in a lot of different design styles. It can also mix and match with a ton of other colors. But personally what I find special about it is that turquoise represents water and the sea, and can evoke the same feelings as staring into the ocean off some secluded island. It’s calming and peaceful.”
For someone who is so inspired by color, this Minnesota native says, “I am not at all against an all-white room. I adore the color white, and I get so much joy from the snow! White is pure; it’s innocent. I always find a white room clean and calm.”
What is your favorite color? How does it inspire you?
