Like the rest of the world, we at HGTV are watching the devastating news from Haiti.

We are grateful for the heroes who have jumped in to help, including our friends at UNICEF.

Executive director Anne Veneman said, “Expert estimates suggest that 46 per cent of Haiti’s nearly 10 million people are under 18 years of age. The special needs of children for food, shelter and protection, must be factored in at the very outset of relief efforts and UNICEF will do everything in its power to make sure these needs are met.”

If you would like to join us in supporting UNICEF’s work to provide shelter and safety to the earthquake’s many victims, you can donate to Haiti.

I am so excited about the New Dream Home in New Mexico. The Desert, The beautiful sunsets, The quiet, Not living in the big city. The remoteness of the place. Love it all. Can't wait to win it. I have made my donation to Haiti. Such a sad situation.

  2. jean rachubka says:

Came to the site to enter for the Dream Home Giveaway and just couldn't do it without first making a donation….so sad for all of those who have no home at all….
    Sincerely,

Ditto Jean! I am just dreaming of homes (or even a safe place tonight) for those poor kids in Haiti right now… HGTV (already a favorite) just gained immeasurable esteem with me:) I challenge every person entering for the dream house to make a donation prior to doing so.

I think this is a wonderful idea. the children in my area are gathering clothing, food and other things to send over to the children in Haiti…they asked what kind of books they read since the Tv is broken. I thought that was really thoughtful for a 5 yr old.

  5. Lessie says:

I LOVE THIS IDEA! Again HGTV is reaching out to help others. Thank you HGTV!

My husband and I donated to yele.org and redcross. We are getting ready to send some clothes and whatever supplies and canned goods, etc. I heard UPS is going to ship everything there for free. So, please do the same too. God Bless Everyone! Just when I thought my husband and I were having financial problems and just barely making the bills, we realized we are lucky and blessed to still have a roof over our heads. And then there this horrible nightmare of a disaster in Haiti!

    • My original post got sent to moderation and may show up later as it has the word s-h-o-e in it. Anway- sadly the UPS is a rumor which is false and they are only accepting official shipments through organizations such as red cross.

  8. Terri1 says:

My church has organized a special donation and care packages for supporting Haiti and will be receiving the collections this Sunday. It is vital and rewarding to help in a time of crises and the less fortunate. Thanks HGTV for being a compassionate proactive network.

  9. Angela says:

Be the lucky winner by entering HGTV dream home!!! Be a winner today Helping HAITI

The news from Haiti is changing by the minute. I will contribute to one of my favorites "Doctors Without Borders" but now I hear even the doctors are advised to leave. How very sad. Ships can not enter the damaged harbor. The airfield is running out of fuel. Aircraft carriers can anchor off shore and send in 'copters with supplies. All I can do right now is pray. I don't pray to win the Dream Home in NM, no wonderful how that might be. But I am praying for the souls in Haiti.

  11. Chrischelle Bruce says:

The Haiti situation is absolutely overwhelming. I donated through Operation Blessing International. Unicef is also a good idea. Just donate however you can and thank God this hasn't happened to you or your family.

  13. MichelleDD says:

What a GREAT idea!!! My husband and I were trying to donate to another organization helping HAITI yesterday, but the website was down. And this morning we saw this on HGTV. And we knew we had to donate and I pray more will feel the same.

  14. Patricia says:

This definitely puts things in a whole new perspective. Thanks to all who are contributing!

We have to help the children in Haiti,

Lets make the difference in today for all those people that today need our help.

HGTv is a great Network, great ideas, helping people get the most out of their property in this distressed market, and I never have to worry abou the commercials with my small child in the room like most networks. Thank you for making a difference, and raising the bar!

  18. bradandcinde says:

Thanks Unicef and HGTV for helping all those in Haiti in need of life's basic needs food and shelter, how easy we forget how precious those things are. It's a blessing to be able to give back. God bless all our volunteers in Haiti giving their precious help and support .

  19. kananilehua says:

Just want to say MAHALO to HGTV for providing the link to the Unicef site. What an easy way to click on to make a donation. Aloha Ke Akua.

  20. Nghime Nguyen says:

Great idea by bringing help to Haiti yet, still having fun by entering to win a dream home.

  21. Cathie says:

All the comments are so inspiring. I plan to give to more than one organization during this time because the need is so widespread and I don't believe just one organization can handle such an enormous task. It will be a chance to take a part in multiple efforts. Operation Blessing was already there so I started with them; Samaritan's Purse provides water and is there; World Vision is already there providing medical supplies. Life Center, Tacoma, WA is working with a non-profit organization to ship supplies. It is so good to see everyone's ideas. It will be interesting to see how the next few days plays out and see if the resources get through with the infrastructure broken down.

  22. Trixie_b says:

I'm lucky enough to work for a company who has offered to match my donation to Haiti dollar for dollar.

I've spent much of the last week in tears reading the news, seeing the pictures and thinking about the huge task ahead of the haitian people. Firstly getting the medical assistance they need and sorting out their infrastructure to get access to clean water, food and much needed sanitation which is the biggest threat to life right now.

I will say that while we are salivating over the dream house, we have to recognize that there is huge amounts of poverty in this country that isn't addressed. If I won the dream house, I'd sell up, pay the taxes, walk away with a substantial amount of savings, give up work and become a foster parent.

  23. SarahD says:

Gail, I just checked out the builders site. Can you tell me what phase the Dream Home is in and do you know how much the association fees are?

  24. luba says:

This is wonderful idea! I keep watching CNN, donated to Bill Clinton Haiti help, donated in Whole foods market for help for Haiti, will again. I am in stage of shock what nature can do. I feel for those unfortunate people. My heart is with them, mostly with children who are small, vulnerable, do not have anyone. I am so happy that some of them are being flown here to Pittsburg. They are so adorable.
The life in Haiti is hell as of now. Admire all those who are helping them.
Haiti is on fault, it is very deep in ocean. On the same fault are Cayman islands where was an earthquake today over 6.0. SOmething is happening out there. The earthquake in Haiti was vertical =the worse you can get.
I watch earthquakes over 5.0 in the world. Lately it seems that is too many happening. I get these announcements form usgs.gov. I started to watch it since my daughter was in that 7.0 earthquake in San Francisco are 1998.

  25. Michele says:

As we continue to view the images from Haiti, we will see the impact that our donations have brought about. And hopefully we will continue to assist these dedicated organizations in the future. We cannot forget about the people of Haiti. It is mindboggling to me that the median age there is twenty. God bless the people who been there for years helping the orphans.

  26. Randi says:

Like other HGTV loyalists, I too am making a contribution here and donating entertainment related memorabilia to Clothes Off Our Back. As this sweepstakes also includes $500,000.00 in cash, if I win I plan to donate at least $100,000.00 to help another family get back on their feet with a roof over their head. The violence that is occuring due to desperation is understandable because these poor souls are forced into survival mode. My heart goes out to the children that have been left alone with no means or family left to provide protection. Everyone must give whatever they can even though we have our own economic crisis. Also, thanks also to our troops that are being deployed- you are heroes at ground zero! Even though we are personally dealing with a flood that wiped out our home, we're blessed to have family and friends that have provided shelter and warmth until we make it through a very harsh winter.

  27. Ninette Challenger -Bird says:

I am an ardent watcher of HGTV. however I have a suggestion to help rebuild Haiti for the future HGTV should do what they do to build these beautiful expenxive homes that are given away in sweepstakes. The only difference is that instead of building one expensive home , that you get the funding to build 25 ordinary and normal 2 and 3 bedroom comfortable homes in Haiti for the people that have lost their homes. Also building them so that they will stand up to another disater and also Hurricanes. As the wife of an Architect I suggest that they the homes be built for the tropics , which means concrete and lots of steel reinforcemnt . Not only homes will need to be built but schools. maybe in that area I can help with a very good Architect with Thirty years of designing schools in California . Let me know what you think of my suggestion . bear in Mind it wil take years to rebuild Haiti. but it can take as little as six months to build a home .

  28. Ninette Challenger -Bird says:

Also I want to remind the people who watch to continue to donate and give from their hearts. I gave also and so have many of my family and friends. All I ask is that you Give from your heart .

  29. Sally & Mickey says:

We too put in our application for HGTV Drean Home and although not donating to you directly we have donated $200.00 through Salvation Army and the Red Cross. Thanks for the good work.

  30. Tampabaygirl says:

While it is great to dream about owning the beautiful HGTV home, we must keep the Haitian people in our thougths and prayers. Say a prayer, send supplies and donations and hope they don't experience anymore earthquakes so we can go in there and rebuild.

  31. Fanelia Pierrecius says:

I'm really touch by everybody's concern about my country haiti. Thankyou so much for giving, eventhough we are going through rough times here but its nothing compare to what my haitian people are going through. I had my share of it for 14years but its nothing like this, we were suffering long before the earthquate striked. eventhough i'm having trouble here paying my bills still i had to make a donation through the coalition for haitian and american empowerment. last night i found out i lost a uncle 2 aunts and their children and grandchildren no one made it out my uncle's ealive. it's by the grace of God that i'm still here. I appreciate every one's prayers and donations. please don't forget about haiti when the cameras do go off. If I do win the dream home I plan on building a school with a playground and a basketball court in my beloved haiti.

  32. Fanelia Pierrecius says:

I'm greatful to all of you for caring and giving to the people of my my country. I and my family thank hgtv for taking a part of this becouse we love your network very much. I lived in haiti from the time i was born until i was 14years old i've been through rough times and seen bad times but never like this. this earrthquake took 10 of my family menbers in one shot. Because of GOD's grace and your donations to help my country, my people that's how i'm able to keep my head up lately. If i win the dream home 2010 I plan on building a school in haiti in my home town and become a foster mother, i have a 9year daughter she asked me how we can bring a couple of the kids here to live with us. Because of financial deficulties, i'm not stable right now but if i win the dream home i promise you some of those children will have a place to call home. please don't forget about my beloved haiti when the cameras do go off. Thankyou everyone, the Presidents, volunteers, hgtv, cnn, the celebreties and you for donating eventhough we going through tough times here, trust me we have it better then haiti. May God Bless you all!

  33. Vody says:

Hello, I donated to The Red Cross for Haiti. I would like to know is it true that the UPS will take things there for free? I will call UPS tomorrow Monday to find. If not, can you please tell me if you know who, or what company is participating in bringing clothes, blankets, can goods with can openers, and non perishable items. From the deepest of my heart, Thank You for all everyone is doing for Haiti, my homeland.

  34. helyn says:

God hates suffering more than any human does Isiah 55 :8,9.Why do we suffer? Sometimes that is the most painful question of all. People ask it sadly when war, disaster, disease , takes their innocent loved ones, destroy their home, or bring them untold sufferings. Jehovah God never causes what is bad to happen. It is comforting for us to know that God does not cause suffering. He is not responsible for wars, crimes, the oppression, or even natural disasters that cause people to suffer. Still we need to know if he is almigty he has the power to stop it. Why, then, does he hold back. Have questions, please welcome Jehovah's Wittness in the next time they are in your neighborhood or call your local Kingdom hall . I plan to do what i am able for the people in Haiti, they are in my prayers daily . And just remember that Jehovah God has each and every one of those who died in his memory bank he plans to resurrect them back on this earth a paradise earth when the time comes. John 5:28,29 Titus 1:2, John 10:27,28, Isiah 45:18, Isaiah 9:6,7 , Revelation 21 3-5 . Sincerly, True

i would like to know about mailling in postcards. I found a blog from you that said postcards DO NOT need to be in an envelope. However, customer service from scripp Network said " to my understanding postcards need to be in an envelope" Which is it? I would love to mail some postcards but will they be disCARDed?
    Love you,

Great idea! I have always loved UNICEF and remember Halloweens as a child where we knocked on doors saying "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" and our neighbors would give coins in addition to the candy. All donations were turned into our schools fo be forwarded to UNICEF. Since then Unicef has always been my first charity
