Welcome Heather Armstrong

I’m delighted to let you know that very soon the ultra-stylish Heather will be a regular presence here on Design Happens. And that’s just the beginning.

HGTV TAPS POPULAR MOM BLOGGER
FOR ON-AIR AND ONLINE CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

Heather Armstrong to Begin Partnership Activities in Spring 2010

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – HGTV has signed Heather Armstrong of dooce.com, recognized as America’s most popular “mommyblogger,” to an exclusive programming development deal in which she will work with HGTV’s online and on-air production teams to create innovative convergence programming for the network.

“We are thrilled to have Heather join the HGTV family,” said HGTV president, Jim Samples. “Not only is she one of the world’s best known bloggers and parenting writers, with a unique and hilarious voice, she’s also a talented designer and photographer. She’s clearly a great fit for us and our audience.”

Armstrong will play a starring role in HGTV’s social media-driven audience engagement initiatives, while continuing to blog at dooce.com.

“I am thrilled to be partnering with HGTV in the upcoming year and have been a huge fan of the network for many years,” said Armstrong.  “In fact, I spent the first three months of my second child’s life watching every episode of Curb Appeal and Designed to Sell, and now if called upon I could stage a house within an inch of its life. I’ve been looking to grow my business beyond its online presence, and having been approached by other media brands before I can confidently say that that there is no better partner than HGTV to help me take this step.”
The network plans to unveil the details of Heather Armstrong’s HGTV platform in spring of 2010. Viewers and online users can get more information on HGTV.com/heather, Facebook/HGTV.com, and via Twitter at HGTV.

“There are numerous opportunities by which Heather’s many talents will come to life, and we’ve been collaborating with her on a menu of them, “said Samples. “We think that both her audience and ours will be excited by what we have in store.”

  1. I love Dooce… and this seems to be a seamless move for her! Very Cool!

  2. I live in Canada. Will I ever be able to see this video? All it does is buffer….

  3. Oh for gods sake. What a LAME choice. BOOOO HGTV. She was a disaster on the Bonnie Hunt show. What a grating personality.

    rolling_my_eyes on January 26, 2010 at 5:48 PM
  4. No one is going to watch that crap.

Lola on January 26, 2010 at 6:29 PM
  5. Oh no, please warn me ahead of time so I can be sure not to watch!

Nettie on January 26, 2010 at 6:45 PM
  6. Heather, did HGTV give you a list of words you cannot use on TV? Oh, wait. It's cable. Just be yourself then.

chikagogirl on January 26, 2010 at 6:56 PM
  7. Great idea!! I love Dooce, and love her style: clean and funky – not that frilly, overly done, cluttered look favored by most "mommies."

And she's a riot – outrageous – definitely an out of the box choice for HDTV. HDTV has something for everyone.

    I can't wait!

Kirsten on January 26, 2010 at 7:33 PM
  8. Yay Heather! HGTV is the BOMB! If I'm in my house, HGTV is on my TV. Love the combo and I can't wait! Congratulations!

  9. OMG? The ultra-stylish Heather? I used to be a fan of dooce.com but in the recent year or so, her site has become so – blah. That style section? Give me a break. How exactly stylish is another Bird or Hippo from Etsy? She and Jon have become so full of themselves with their rise in fame. And she has such lousy presence on video – her voice makes me wince and her attitude is just nasty. If the recent and annoying appearances she's had on Oprah and Bonnie Hunt are any indication of her television prowess the show won't be on that long anyway. Blech. I used to like watching Design Happens. Oh well.

  10. Seriously? Ok. Whatever floats your boat HGTV. Stop riding the popularity bandwagon.

Big ass guest on January 26, 2010 at 9:39 PM
  11. Eww gross. Don't you sheeple have anything better to do? I suggest getting a life that doesn't include following this blogtard and her every new endeavor. She's a puppet to all of these companies wanting a piece of the "modern mommy" demographic and she sold her soul a looong time ago.

If you were smart you'd realize instead of wasting your time reading a blog about poop and boobs you could actually write about your own blog about your own kid shitting it's pants and make money at it!

Heather should change her name to ChaChing!

  12. Ugh, you have got to be kidding me. I will never understand the appeal of this horrid woman, or what she has to offer in the way of real entertainment. I thought HGTV featured people with actual talent, but times must be a changin'.

lisa on January 27, 2010 at 10:34 PM
  13. I don't get it? Is HGTV suddenly looking to create another lame family reality show? That woman whining about emptying her dishwasher and babytalking her dogs seems very annoying to me.

sue on January 28, 2010 at 3:55 PM
  14. Design and style from a woman who decorates her bathroom with a big basket on the floor filled with dozens of rolls of toilet paper??? Baffling.

Karen on January 29, 2010 at 9:32 AM
  15. I have followed Heather’s blog for years and love her writing, photos, and design style. I am very excited to hear that she is partnering with HGTV! Not only is she an inspired writer, she is clearly a powerful and forward-thinking buisnesswoman, and I have nothing but respect for her many successes. You go, girl!

Amanda on January 29, 2010 at 7:00 PM
  16. This is NOT why I turn into HGTV.

I don't want her advice, or family humor, etc.

Christina on February 2, 2010 at 10:57 PM
  17. I love reading Dooce, but HGTV? Come on, one of the funniest things about Dooce's blog is her horrid design taste. What could she possibly have to offer anyone for design tips? HGTV, did you ever see her awful bathroom remodel? Or how about that soulless, uninspired nursery? Get real, you've lost me.

katy on February 3, 2010 at 2:21 AM
  18. If douche bags like John & Kate can become famous for nothing and get their own shows… then why not Jon & Heather?

    Possible show title: "Doocebaggery"
Possible future episode idea: Since Heather has been labeled as "Ulta-stylish" by the author of this article, how about have her make over the new home for the 2nd season The Jersey Shore? Considering the make-up Heather is wearing in the video link above is clown-like and akin to that spray-on tans of the self-proclaimed guidos in the MTV show, I think this would be a smash hit! I think Snooki, Heather, and The Situation would be fantastic broadcasting.

The Sheepshagger on February 9, 2010 at 2:38 AM
  19. Wow. You've got to be kidding. Heather has no style, I mean seriously, did you see the nursery? Or the bathroom? Why on earth people find Heather Armstrong even remotely interesting is beyond me. Perhaps people enjoy mediocrity and bad taste.
    Bad move HGTV, she sucks.

Please dear god no on February 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM
  20. Seriously HGTV? Dooce? Lame. I've lost respect for you…

Amy on February 9, 2010 at 9:08 PM
  21. You have GOT to be kidding me! Dooce absolutely sucks and I can't wait to NOT WATCH her stupid show. I may have to stop watching HGTV all-together in protest.

    F-Dooce on February 10, 2010 at 1:49 AM
  22. Love Dooce – love HGTV – congrats all around!

Bev on February 10, 2010 at 2:08 PM
  23. Just saw the commercial for the first time today and my jaw dropped. As a reader of Dooce.com for 7 years I can't believe what can happen when you take great writing, design and a few expletives and mix them with a husband, a dog, and a couple of kiddos. Love ya Heather. Congratulations.

Eddie Charles Renz on February 11, 2010 at 12:34 AM
  24. Seriously?? I don’t know about style–she may have it–but she’s completely without class. HGTV, you really blew it with this one. I never thought I’d say this, but with this move I just went to a *former* HGTV viewer. Really.

    give_me_five on February 11, 2010 at 4:04 PM
  25. *eyeroll* I'd rather watch the Gosselins exploit their kids for cash…at least they have an unusually large number of them.

Lynn on February 11, 2010 at 9:51 PM
  26. Maybe im living under a rock [and I am also a 'mom-blogger'] but who the heck is Heather Armstrong!?

I saw the commercial last night and couldn't figure out who and why she was on HGTV so I googled her and found her blog. Seems like every other 'mom-blogger' out there if you ask me….

Came here, read the comments and noticed a lot 'referring' to her bathroom so of course I had to go check it out and wow… Her bathroom looked a lot better BEFORE her remodel.

Sooooo why did HGTV pick up this Mom blogger again? Im confused.

Stacey on February 12, 2010 at 3:23 PM
  27. going to be a celeb now!

dthneece on February 12, 2010 at 11:48 PM
  28. Wow – I was shocked when I saw the ad… shocked & disappointed. I find Heather to be too crass for my tastes & thus – this will be a show I avoid. I guess I don't understand success based on vulgarity – but others seem to enjoy. Just don't count me in as a fan.

Lynne on February 13, 2010 at 7:40 PM
  29. Heather….
YOu may not like hearing this…but OMG- you are an attractive lady… PULEEZE let your hair grow longer….it is truly OK to look like a woman….

Mella on February 14, 2010 at 10:24 PM
  30. Not happy to see that poor dog having to hold that stick on his nose. Hope she's a better mother than dog owner! That's just cruel.

Jane on February 14, 2010 at 10:49 PM
  31. Sold out. I can't believe they are calling her a mommy blogger.

eag on February 15, 2010 at 12:55 PM
  32. Will you be bleeping her mouth if she talks out of turn or will she have to behave herself?
Did not realize ya'll were such a liberal bunch.
I for one will not be watching.

DifferentDog on February 16, 2010 at 1:46 AM
  33. Are her followers called "Doocebags"?

Dobie on February 16, 2010 at 4:29 PM
  34. Ah, yes, the woman who once blogged about leaving her kid in a car whilst her and her husband went into a Chili's or something for dinner, and thought it was funny. Um, yeah, she's a treasure. Last straw for me, HGTV. See ya.

    K10 on February 16, 2010 at 7:03 PM
  35. So, I am watching HGTV and a commercial comes up for advertising Heather. The web site addy is http://www.hgtv.com/heather and all I get is a little press release and the rest of the commercial that was on TV. Hey marketing folks at HGTV – I am NOT sold on Heather. I don't know who she is but first impression is she is great with dogs and wears way too much make up for TV. Good luck! She may be great but I have no idea at this point why I should watch for her on your network. Please enlighten me!!

Monique on February 20, 2010 at 4:50 AM
  36. I get that HGTV is trying to get in on the mommy blogging thing but most of these women are good at writing (ok, a few) but that doesn't make them relateable, particularly on camera. Martha Stewart may be a polarizing figure but she knows about homekeeping, and you trust her advice. Dooce isn't a design blog. It is a "this is how much i hate my life and exploit my children" blog. What could she possibly offer? Besides, she seems really wooden onscreen.

Maggie on February 21, 2010 at 11:43 PM
  37. Another lame show…ugh!

  42. I know this is a stupid question, but why don't you hire people who paid good money to become professional designers to post on this blog? Duh. The suits are LOVING the controversy. I didn't want this blog to turn into another Wackadoo World. I come here to look at amazing, interesting rooms styled by people who know how to put together a design theme.

  43. So exciting! Love, love, love Dooce

    Maggie B. on April 18, 2010 at 2:09 AM
  44. OMG! She's painful to even watch in that video. I hope HGTV is going to at least keep her off TV and on the internet only! Please, no more videos or pictures of her. Better yet just go take pictures of those little staged designs at IKEA. I think Heather just uses the cheap versions of those for her home and then throws in stories of giving her children enemas and complaining about people who don't think she's God.

Heidi on May 12, 2010 at 4:44 PM

That and it seems like she's kind of getting rich off more fickel American bloggers and greedy TV execs.
