Every Friday, we post a question. You have until 12 Noon ET on Monday to comment on this post with a valid email address and you’re entered for that week’s giveaway. It’s that simple!
This week we partnered with one of our favorite independent publishers, W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. They’re the oldest and largest publishing house owned wholly by its employees and they strive to “publish books not for a single season, but for the years.” Their design books are impeccably researched and beautifully bound — the one I reviewed on Michael Taylor remains a favorite in my library. Our giveaway is their book, Arts and Crafts Rugs for Craftsman Interiors.
Here’s a blurb from the book jacket:
Gustav Stickley is revered not only as a furniture maker but also as a leading proponent for the American Arts and Crafts movement.
He designed simple, well-made household furnishings and forward-looking interiors, which he promoted through his magazine, The Craftsman (1901–1916). The rugs used in his interiors are arguably the most under-studied of all the decorative arts of the Arts and Crafts movement. Arts and Crafts Rugs for Craftsman Interiors considers both the rugs that The Craftsman recommended and designs by artists who influenced the work and philosophy of Stickley.
This is a worthy addition to any design library, especially for those interested in the influence of Stickley, William Morris and Gavin Morton on the field of interior design.
And here’s our question: What’s your favorite design style? Are you an Arts and Crafts fan? Do you drool over mid-century modern? Does updated traditional best reflect your personality? Or do you blend them all, in eclectic glory?

I have a Craftsman, mid-20's, cute little bungalow house (tiny, very tiny). I have been slowly adding Arts & Crafts furnishings to it. However, previous owners did some changes and took out some architectural details. Now, I hope to win the lottery to bring it back to its original splendor. Wish me luck!
I’m into eclectic glory! I enjoy blends sooooo much and have a gift, so i’ve been told, of blending different aspects and really pulling them off to absolute beauty and a style of their very own.
I love the country style farmhouse with primitives. I do not live in one but I do have alot of primitive things.
I'm more modern than I used to be. I like clean lines on furniture. Love art; paintings, sculptures. I love wood but on ceilings or in beams and beautiful floors.
If I had another house to do I'd do contemporary with red loungers and chrome
and great huge canvases on the walls of post modern art, but my house is comfortable
now, it's part Santa Fe and part Traditionalist with bits of stark modern thrown in
Considering I've spent half my life tending to Victorian furniture, object d'art, and all of the fuss that goes along with that era, I am now at peace living in a traditional environment. It's a cozy mix of elements including several antique pieces that really make the eye move around the home. I really love it when my friends want me to help them decorate their places and enjoy bargain shopping for accessories, getting a lot of ideas from HGTV.
I love the updated traditional. It never hurts to add some color beyond the traditional look. With so many new fabrics and paints to choose from , just a touch can give a room a lift. I love change in decorating. I'm an avid HGTV fan.. there are so many ideas if you watch. If you can't afford them all, just a small change can do wonders. I think change is the key word.
I have found that I have a very eclectic ensemble of tastes in my home. I find the rooms are done more to mood and personality. My rooom is done in renissance and computer room is jungle-giraffe. Well done thanks to HGTV and DIY. Need help with other rooms but we will get there someday! Always looking for that special look added to my own unique style!
I wish I knew about style!! I know when something looks good at someone else;s house or in the magzines, but have a problem putting something together for myself.
Hardest part, is just making decisions!
Arts and Crafts design is one of my favorites. I love the natural elements like wood.
I love the Southwest simplicity of the Adobe homes. They are bright and open. The turquoise and Terra Cotta colors are awesome and make such a statement against the stucco walls. Love the Santa Fe look.
I like most of the different styles. When I buy, I buy a piece because I love it, not because of the style. My style is eclectic and I love what I have.
More or less eclectic… He loves modern, and I love great lines that are still inviting and comfortable.
I love an ethnic vibe. I like things that look like I've traveled the world. Even if I havent……YET!
I am definately a traditional style! Everytime I try to step out of the box, I find myself falling back. I definately love the arts and crafts!!
Traditional mixed with Modern, I can't give up my traditional leanings but am learning to appreciate modeern styles.
Met the man of my dreams in my California mountain town, and found myself relocating to Kansas! A lot of my furniture I collected in Vermont, and managed to hold on to some of my more favorite pieces. I love 1920's, anything, my favorite chair is from the 40's, teal blue mohair, and there's that Stickey mission oak chair I picked up at a tag sale. When I arrived at my new home in Kansas, my man had some of his grandmothers 1960's maple (ugh) furniture mixed in with what he thought was some pretty nice furniture. At this point, lol I think we need an intervention. You should see the kitchen! Original, right out of 1960. I told him if we wait long enough, everything will be considered vintage and will be worth a lot of money!
I have an eclectic style and some how it seems to work. What I would really love is new paint job and flooring to really do it justice as I have several piecs of traditional/contempory paired with an eastern flair. I do however notice a theme of water, vases, and blossoming stems, which I hadn't planned on, but it seemed to happen. A very natural element has insued in this 1940's home.
I love the stencil art and faux painting..I'd love to have them in my home..however, I can't afford to ire someone..Ild love to do it myself..would welcome help.
I have been looking for inspiration and this book would definitely get me on a track.
I'm not sure what you would call it, but more country with lots of wood.
It gives us a warm homey feeling & we love it!
I'd like for Jesus to come back.
My favorite design style would probably be something close to what you would see in an enchanted castle. Vines on the walls, silk bedding that you just slide off of. Torches on the walls, and a huge dining room. Fireflies lighting up the court yard, and furniture that looks like it belongs in a vineyard. I think that would be awesome.
