Veteran interior designer, Valerie Onor, 2009′s Designer of the Year at the Mansions & Millionaires showhouse on Long Island, turned wedding gifts into a beautiful and spiritually moving Children’s Chapel at New York City’s Marble Collegiate Church on 5th Avenue.

In their invitation, Valerie and her husband, Dick Doll, asked their guests if they wished to donate a gift, to put it towards the creation of the Childrens’ Chapel. In addition to these gifts, many of the artists and craftsmen employed by Valerie’s interior design firm contributed their time and skill.

Looking to the children of the church for inspiration, Valerie incorporated their wish list into her design and shepherded the building of this space.

She also incorporated some of the words of the church’s famous pastor, Norman Vincent Peale, and reclaimed one of the church’s historic Tiffany stained-glass windows. Out of a dark, cramped storage closet, she created a beautiful, comforting and sacred space where children can talk to God.

I was lucky enough to see Valerie Onor's award winning space in Long Island this past year and she told me about this chapel. I made a point of stopping in to see it in person and I am glad I did, what a lovely space for adults and children alike. Such a pleasure! She created such a wonderful haven in her design of this sacred space. If you have a chance to stop by Marble Church in NYC on a Sunday to see it, do so. It gets the creative juices flowing just to see what can be made out of a humble storage space.

One small note: The reused stained glass window piece in the chapel is not attributed to Tiffany, I was told on my tour that it is American blown, handrolled wavy glass circa 1891.

This is such a sweet project and I love what she did here. I've never seen anything like it!
