Designers Alison Palevsky and Sarah Shetter — the team behind SPI Design – are experts at making modern style both comfortable and livable. A chic loft by SPI Design was recently featured in one of our Weekly Tours. Sarah and Allison share their first project working together and the ultra-stylish destinations they most enjoy visiting.

1. Which designers influenced you?
Andree Putman, Sister Parish, Ray and Charles Eames, Gio Ponti, Oscar Neimeyer and Ralph Lauren.

 2. What’s your favorite design style?
Anything that exudes courage and humility.

 3. What’s the essential home accessory (or piece of furniture) you use in your designs?
Our U Chair from our custom furniture line, SPI Line. It works in every environment from traditional to modern – we especially love it in the rosewood finish.

4. What’s your favorite vacation spot?
We spent a month on a boat that sailed to all of the different islands in Greece – Santorini, Crete, Mykonos…. Every place we visited was captivating. We love to travel, so we have many favorites — the Londolozi Lodge in South Africa, Lamu island off the coast of Kenya, Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Montepulciano and  Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree Rainforest, Australia.

 5. Show us the project you most enjoyed designing and tell us why you love it.

This apartment in New York City was one of our very first projects, and it was a complete gut and remodel that we worked on for about a year.

It was the second project we had done together as a design team, and we were definitely a little green.

That said, it is one of our very favorite spaces because of the high ceilings, the ample amount of sunlight that comes in through the windows, and the eclectic mix of furnishings we found throughout NYC, LA and Palm Springs. Every time we see the photos, we are reminded how much we love our job.
