Here at HGTV.com, design holds a special place in our hearts. Whether stationery, product, interior or packaging, design has a way of holding our hand through the endless sea of ugly things — beckoning us to re-think, redo and rejuvenate.

Of course, our adoration for the Internet also abounds, so when you meld the two? Burning love. You can imagine how excited I was, then, to participate in a NYC panel a few nights ago about design+blogging. At Blog Out Loud on Monday night, today’s top design bloggers waxed on about authenticity, sincerity and the business of design in a swanky, industrial-inspired loft in the Flatiron District.

On the panel? Super-smart Meredith Barnett of The Inside Source, flawless tastemaker Alison Feldmann of Etsy, driven Amy Dragoo of ABCD Design, witty and positive Michelle Ward of When I Grow Up… and me. Our audience members were sweet as pie, listening to us share the perils of overloading inboxes and the joys of our very first comments (most of which were from our mothers, admittedly).

The design community is indeed a lovely one, and although our audience members left with smiles and inspiration, it was us, the “expert” panelists, who left exhilarated. Michelle Ward notes, “It was absolutely reinforced to me last night that the blogging community is one that is a positive, supportive community. We’re here to share our wins/lessons/challenges, make connections, build relationships & find the like-minded people who live on the other side of town and on the other side of the world.”

And as a small-town gal living in a tiny Indiana city, those relationships are my saving grace. Meredith Barnett adds, “I found it fascinating that the primary benefits cited by so many panelists were the relationships and friendships built through blogging. It’s amazing that we meet so many people virtually…and then pretty cool to bring it back to the real world in an event like last night’s.”

What about you, readers? Do you have a blog? Would you ever start one? (I’d highly recommend it!)

What a lovely thing, this design blogging world. If only to support and inspire one another in our individual efforts to express creativity, we are a great gift to one another!

Thank you to all of you, the panelists and the audience, for helping Blog Out Loud become what it is. Rebecca and I are humbly appreciative and so happy to be a part of this great movement! Keep posted, we're just getting started!

I think these are such a great idea…I only wish you would make the entire program available. Tape it and show, maybe? Or am I missing something here? I keep looking and looking for a video of the eveing, but haven't found one, of any of the events. You publicize it SO much, but then only a VERY few people actually get to take advantage.

  3. Hi there to every one, for the reason that I am in fact keen of reading this blog’s post to be
updated daily. It carries nice information.
