Bill Musso of Musso Design Group has a “no surprises” approach when it comes to designing his clients’ homes and businesses. His beautiful and practical designs work within the owners’ taste to ensure their love for the finished product. This is certainly the case with the Rosemary Beach home in Florida, renovations for which began in December 2009 and ended in June.

Bill says: The main house has 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms and a one bedroom/one bath carriage house with a full kitchen. Our task was to update a very dark and dreary home into a bright, interesting and relaxed second home for clients in Atlanta.

The light fixture in the living room is crafted from an antique crab trap, repurposed by Solaria lighting. It is 4 feet in diameter.

A significant challenge was the very low kitchen ceiling. By removing sheet rock, rerouting plumbing to a 3rd floor bathroom and wrapping beams in reclaimed timber, we converted a liability into a very interesting asset. The kitchen renovation includes new cabinetry, concrete counter tops, new lighting and appliances.

We replaced damaged hardwood floors on the ground floor with travertine to stand up to sand and water tracked in from the beach. The original heart pine floors on the main floor were finished with a lime wash. All of the bathrooms were gutted, redesigned for better functionality and finished in highly durable, luxurious finishes.

Shades of turquoise appear on every floor to provide continuity throughout the home. The turquoise was paired with different colors: neutrals on the main floor, chartreuse in the ground floor guest bedroom and a fun orange in the third floor loft.

The master bedroom is calming and sophisticated. The Waterworks tile in the master bath echoes the rich colors from the Gulf of Mexico just outside the owner’s screened in porch. This tile became a jump-off point for the master suite’s color scheme of blues and browns. I designed the custom headboard.

The living area on the main floor is designed to be flexible and take on different arrangements as needed for different entertaining scenarios. The two sectional sofas and tufted ottomans move around to accommodate large parties or intimate gatherings.

The open front porch is often used for al fresco dining. The living room’s custom cabinet houses the audio visual equipment. The television is hidden when not in use.

The third floor loft is a fun space for kids without being too juvenile and gender specific. We tried to select a color palette that would appeal to any age group.

This floor features a beautiful Victoria & Albert bathtub that essentially sits in the middle of a large shower. No need for a shower curtain, as the tiled floor, walls and floor drain take care of any splashes.
