For more than 20 years, Susan Anthony has worked as an interior designer for homes, offices and medical facilities. She and her partner, Maureen Wright, take on projects like the Acorn Cottage through their design firm, Anthony Wright Interiors. The Acorn Cottage is different than Susan’s other projects, though — she has to live in it every day.

Susan says: I moved from a much larger home and took with me the antiques and furniture that I had the most connection with. After seeing these pieces together, I filled in the blanks with new items. I did not want furniture, rooms or objects that were not relevant to my life now.

I re-purposed an old barn window frame, making it the centerpiece of my living room. I also stained a Ralph Lauren pine cabinet the color I used on the floor and added antique mirrors to the backs of the shelves.

I love the antique Swedish Moira clock in my foyer.

Since I needed a large piece to house my serving platters and vases, I purchased an antique French buffet and paired it with chairs that I already owned.

The previous owner had replaced two windows with modern ones. I did not want to discard perfectly new windows, so I inserted leaded glass window panes on the inside to match the theme of the cottage.

The garden was the primary inspiration for my exterior paint colors, which I chose first. I stood in the garden and looked at the house in its surroundings with paint colors in hand. I selected colors that went with the sky, leaves and stone.

I used that palette on the interior — leaf green, creamy yellow, sky blue, stone grey, rose pink and earth brown for the floors.

Moving from a large house to a small one requires deliberation and planning so that storage is efficient.

When we finished the house, there was a full bathroom, an entry foyer, a beautiful bedroom and dining room that perfectly fit my taste. I named my cottage after acorns, nature’s perfect food, and this cottage is the perfect food for me.

I love Susan's work. She makes a room feel warm and inviting. I am originally from the South, and I love this decor design. Susan just has a way of decorating that makes me homesick. Beautiful work Susan….
