We love Emmo Home‘s modern take on housewares, not to mention their site, with categories like Be a Foodie, Love Your Kids and Visit Slumberland. This week, you’ll have a chance to win their knife stand — sleek and modern, but functional with a dishwasher-safe sleeve (and you know how nice that is if you’ve been wiping down a wooden block for years).
One reader will receive the slanted knife stand by answering this week’s question before 12/11c, Monday, September 13th.
This week’s question: What kitchen utensil needs a style makeover?

A manual can opener that won’t rust in the dishwasher.
Basters are definitely hot to be revolutionized. You can get them in silicon so they don't melt but you still have two parts…hard to clean…
Blender, definitely.
It would be nice to see a dishbrush that came with disposable bristle heads. Kind of how you replace your razor blades. You keep the wand but the head of the brush can be detached and thrown away when it gets old and gross. You just buy a pack of replacement bristle heads. It's like having a new brush, but more efficient than buying a new brush.
I have to go with the potato peeler…it's pretty functional the way it's almost always seen but not sure how much of a makeover can be done. There you go.
A pasta server – the current design doesn't work great since the pasta still slips though and you are spreading pasta on the table on the way to your plate.
Potato masher – awkward to store and use.
Dish drainers!!! Usually the eye sore in the kitchen
Grater. It's a pain to clean and store and dangerous to your knuckles!
A manual can opener…definitely.
OK, I am a gadget freak so this takes some thought. There are so many great utensils out there. MIXING BOWLS!!!!! Who hasn't had the problem of using a mixer for cake batter, for example and it seems to splatter no matter what you do. It should be simple to make the bowls deeper and narrower at the top so mix ingredients don't FLY out!! LOL Can I get an amen??
Ladles are very boring!
I think everyone is missing the obvious. In this day and age with all the technoligical advances that we have made…..the answer is quite simple. IT's the spoon. It's never deep enough especially when eating soup or measuring. It would be very simple to redesign and a little more of a handle bend would make it easier to manuever.
a sifter what a pain to clean! they also break after 2 uses
Lisa
tongs – they should be bigger where the fingers go and the "grabbing" part should be wider.
food processor. Should be smaller and quick and easy to use and clean
:p
I would say the egg slicer. There has to be something better than using those thin little wires. Mine always break after using them for awhile.
I say potato peeler – there has to be a better design
A reliable ergonomic jar opener for those of us who have "lost our grip" or have arthritis
cookie sheets. and spatulas
I would say my knives set!! I can picture this in a different color, shape, material…..I need a new set that has Style and pizazz!!!! :0)~
By the way, have I mentioned how much I LOVE HGTV and that I'm addicted!!??
The spatula, with nice curved edges to fit a fry pan perfectly.
Oh yeah, I have to say that I like the Emmo Home Knife Stand! That would L@@K great in my new kitchen that I remodeled. It goes with the black granite I had installed. Love it!!
Veggie peeler
a sifter is a good idea
The pizza cutter. I haven't seen a well designed one yet!
I think the paper towel holder needs redone. They are either in the way or plane ugly!
Definitely the can opener–would be nice to be much more stylish!!
Vegetable shredder. I always take off too much..
ice cream scooper. still haven't found one i like.
Cheese slicer. It seems the cheese wire does not cut all the way through. I make a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches with colby cheese and sometimes cheddar.
the punch top can opener… the one that opens liquids by punching a little triangle through the lid…. There has got to be a way to make one that can be washed in the dishwasher without rusting.
Potato masher
Spatula……….maybe made from a really firm silicone……..it needs to withstand heat, be flexible yet rigid, and not scratch cooking pans……..
I would have said kitchen knives, but I didn't know there were designs like Emmo Home either! The potato/apple peeler could use some help. It seems that they're either of good quality, or good looking, but so far, not both!
The "marinating brush", it's a pain to wash it without leaving some bbq or glaze on it.
Ladle- too big to fit in the drawer and the drawer always jams. also the jar opener things that never work
the cheese grater…
Need smaller knives stand. Knives stands are just too big.
I think the toaster oven is in need of a makeover! It is very useful but takes up lots of space and is sort of ugly to look at.
The paring knife. Any time I'm peeling lots of hard fruits (for instance apples for sauce, pears for canning) I end up with a callus on my index finger, because of how the top of the blade rests on that part of the finger. Now I know to wear a bandaid when I'm peeling, but there should be some type of cushion along the top of the blade.
gravy ladle — the handle is way too long, and I would prefer a triangular cup to dip the gravy.
potato masher for sure – so difficult to clean!
Something better for making homemade gravy…getting the lumps out is a workout
Nylon spoons–you know, the ones safe for non-stick pans–could definitely use some help.
I agree with cheese shredder. Awkward to store, awkward to use. If it got a good revamping, I wouldn't buy pre-shredded cheese so much.
No matter how hard you try to hide it, potato peelers are UGLY.
Ok I have 3 one of them is not technically a utensil BUT cant wait until i see an updated version.
1.) garlic press they're all horrible. I have had what would be considered specialty shops version and they are no better; a 1/4 of your garlic remain in there and it stinks to clean.
2.) the spatula-the rubber ones everything sticks to and the medal ones scratches everything
3.) I have a LOVE hate relationship w/ my toaster love what does for my bagels, mini pizzas, etc… hate how "rickety"they all seem to be and cleaning is a hassle. Also don't want stuff on my counters and if Im going to hang it it need to look good/
the potato peeler needs a redo… multiple shapes of the handles currently available are ok but there needs to be a way to sharpen the blades without having to replace the entire item.
What about fondue sticks? We have two fondue sets and we LOVE them, but we only use them for special things. Wouldn't it be fabulous if there were fondue sticks as special as the events we use them for instead of the standard color dot on the end? Please redesign them!!
