My favorite product makeover was when I found an old red cabinet for free on the side of the road. It looked as though it had been used for storage in someone's garage. Once cleaned up and some blemishes where painted (The red paint from my exterior doors matched the red exactly – yippee!), it now has a prominent place in my kitchen with plants on the top and my birdhouse collection on the shelves. The red is a great pop against my pale gray walls.

I would have to say that my favorite "ain’t your granny’s product makeover" is this one! What a cool idea!

  5. Susan P. says:

I actually use lace doilies as a texture tool for making a really great pattern on wheel thrown platters. Basically, you throw a plate and before turning up the edges, lay the doily in the middle, roll with rolling pin or brayer and gently lift it off. The edges of the platter can then be pulled up. It really looks nice with a breaking glaze.

Canning. Skip the canned beans and corn – today's chutneys, applesauce, and pickled beets are fabulous.

  7. Kellee says:

My favorite “this ain’t your granny’s” product makeover are the new farmhouse sinks. I really like how they look in these new modern, contemporary kitchens! A bit of the old with a new style. They are featured a lot on HGTV shows too!

My favorite "this ain't your granny's' product makeover are the bathroom mirrors that we have redone out of her vanity table

Sneakers! My grandmother was one of those "old ladies in tennis shoes" way back when that's what they were called. These days, you can get some seriously high-tech sneakers – including the ones that shape you up while you walk. Those are NOT my grandmother's sneakers!

  10. beyond says:

old milk jugs and mason jars for vases!

I made my coffee table out of an giant picture frame that I got for free and added wood to the middle and feet from spindles that you would use for staircases and attached them so they are removable, I also made my headboard from a giant picture frame attached wood to the middle, and the end so it would have posts and handpainted it and attached it to my wall with L brackets. I love it and have had many compliments. HGTV ROCKS!!!!! I LOVE TO DECORATE AND CREATE

  12. Christine Kujawa says:

My favorite 'this ain't your granny's makeover' are quilts and the many ways they are used today to decorate. I never thought my daughter would be a quilter, but she has made some beautiful quilts, throws and totes that are so 'today'.

  13. Belinda says:

I bought two file cabients (the two drawer style) at an auction. They were blond and the bedroom was a darker wood. I sanded them and stained them to match the bed. Now we have bedside tables that are the perfect height and provide storage at the same time.

My favorite "this ain't your granny's " product makeover would be the Kymaro Body Shaper. I remember when I was young my mom wearing a girdle, & I was thinking to myself, no way–it's not worth this! I saw the infomercial on the Kymaro Body Shaper & thought if only this had come out in my mom's day!

  15. I have to admit the doilies are adorable, but my favorite "ain't your granny's" makeover was from an antique door that a friend redesigned to make an amazing workbench/table/desk. I wish I still had pictures. He used old chair and stool legs which gave it an eclectic/funky look. I loved it, but it was so heavy.

  16. sarah says:

I think my granny would be offended by this question. Once I refurbed an antique chair and got reprimanded….

  17. Joy Plyler says:

In 1983 my Dad built me a china hutch. It was stained a maple color. Had glass doors etc. When I renovated my kitchen dining it just didn't match, so I took the doors off, sanded and painted a cobalt blue then painted black gloss on top. Now when it is distressed I see the beautiful blue. The open shelfs look more modern and my blue room collection plates are stunner against the black. Love it.

  18. Laura Krbec says:

I took a piece of outside wall art, hung it with chain from the ceiling and added some S hooks to turn it into a pot rack. It cost a third of the price, and allows me the extra storage I needed. I have oil rubbed bronze fixtures in the kitchen so the black from the art worked great!

  19. Cindy says:

I have doilies all around my house! I love the pops of color they add. I crochet my own and enjoy making them. These are my favorite "this ain't your granny's " style!!

  20. becca says:

When my grammy had to move in with my parents, a lot of her things had to be pared down. I swooped in and asked her for her art collection which was going in the trash!!! Nothing terribly valuable, a ton of gold framed monet prints from the 60's and 70's. My husband thought I would never actually hang them because the frames were so gaudy, but he was super wrong. We can't exactly afford to re-frame them all, so I spray painted all of the frames in a brushed nickel or black. They look amazing for a mere $12 in spray paint. And now even though I live so far away and so much has changed, I will always be reminded of grammys house when I see them, but won't have to hide them in the closet because they don't match the decor.

  21. Terry Andrews says:

My daughter took 2 french doors that were previously in my parents home and made a room divider. She hinged the 2 doors together and put rollers on the bottom. She left the wood the same, no stain or paint. They look great! She hangs wreaths and pictures on them also. She also uses my grandfather's WW1 army trunk as a coffee table and stores throws and blankets inside.

  22. Robyn says:

I have an old side table that was refinished and a rocking chair

  23. Jessica D says:

    ~mason jars as glasses!~

  24. Doreen Williams says:

My favorite was the base to an antique sewing machine I foynd. Black wrought iron and no rust. It has the holes that were used to hold the machine on it so I bought a piece of wood, stained it cherry, used black screws and adhered it to the top, plus there were 2 brackets for a shelf underneath, again I bought a smaller piece of wood and turned it into a phone stand. The small shelf holds a phone book while on top is the phone, pen, paper and rolodex for quick calls. It sits in a small nook normally used for a desk but this works much better for private calls.

  25. Dawn Mager says:

This aint your grannys makeover is really my 89 year old mothers -lol I use her occupied in Japan tea pot to liven up a side table in my family room- she actually used it for years but I drink expresso- so it just sits there looking fab!

  26. Jean says:

I have the old claw foot bath tub from my grandparents house and turned it into a reading nook. I repainted it inside and out and made throw pillows to fill it. We all love to lay in it and read or do crossword puzzles, or just watch nature out the window.

    • Alea says:

The second grade teacher at our christian school has done the same thing in her classroom. Kids who are doing especially well that day following the rules or listening or whatever get to take a reading break in her bathtub full of pillows. They love it!

  27. Sarah says:

I love this makeover! This is a fantastic idea, & I want some!

  28. Mavis J says:

my mother's trunk that a refurbed into an end table. This was the trunk my mother used when she went headed off to college in 1944. I first refurbed it when I headed off to college 35 years later (painted exterior and refinished interior with a cloth lining). Many years later I drug the trunk back out to be used as an end table in living room. It's perfect and adds character.

  29. Jymma Stimpson says:

I love these doilies. My favorite "this aint your granny"s makeover are two old chest we found. I striped them and my husband bolted them together. I painted them black and replaced the copper knobs. It makes a very powerful statement …it demands to be noticed.

  30. Pat says:

Mine is taking an old clay pot and using mosiac tile on it to make it new again.

  31. barbara says:

    China. it's much cooler now!

  32. Elizabeth Lollis says:

I like the farmhouse or claw foot tubs! I love how they have been gaining a come back! We had a real one in a house we lived in for a couple of years. I fell in love with them! I love the way you simply fit for soaking. And now they are beautiful, modern and classic!

  33. Kathy Rockwell says:

I have individual place settings from a bunch of different relatives. I use them when I serve a nice family dinner. Everyone gets a different one.

  34. Jo H says:

My favorite "not my granny's makeover" is an old wooden chair found for free at the side of the road – painted shiny cobalt blue and seat covered with wonderful striped fabric. It's a comfy conversation piece, and the intricate back is really enhanced by the shiny blue paint!

  35. Baskets! Grannie used to have old artificial flowers in them. I love using them to store my salt & pepper shakers and butter dish, or napkins for the table, or live plants, or gloves in winter… no dusty old plastic flowers!

  36. ladyxan says:

I must agree, the doily is cool! That is *definitely* not my grama's style. LoL I have not seen one used in decades now, but I would use these. I have used a birthday card with similar cuts for a powered sugar design on a birthday cake within the past three years though.

Refurbished furniture would be my choice though.

  37. Peggy Lemos says:

My favorite is grandmas hankies. I placed them in frames and they made wonderful wall art.

  38. Lilliana says:

i saw a blog and maybe on apartment therapy where they took several “grandma’s” doilies in white and off white in various sizes and patterns and sewed them together to make a really cool runner. Super easy and way cool juxtaposed in a modern decor.

  39. sweet & unique says:

i love taking an older but stylish bag, usually a clutch and adding a hint of style by accenting it with a vintage pin… it just adds a little, but the small touch personalizes it to your style for a very unique evening bag.

  40. francine vorbeck says:

Grape jelly jars with cartoons on them used as glasses

  41. Lauri R. says:

My favorite “this ain’t your granny’s” product makeover was one I did myself to an old wooden chair I found on the curb. It was in no shape to sit in anymore so I painted it bright red, cut a hole in the seat and dropped in a planter filled with a beautiful mum plant! My refurbish chair/planter now sits in my driveway and is a conversation piece for all who walk by.

  42. Lindalee says:

I'm a tole painter. My favorite project ever was taking an old milk can and turning it into a lamp. I also painted on the front my favorite picture of birds and birdhouses in a tree beside a little country cottage

  43. Joanne Deschenes says:

THIS AIN'T MY GRANNY'S …. IRON……. My grandmother ironed in her kitchen. She used wood in coal in her cooking stove…. I can remember from when I was a child…. Well, she heated her flat iron on the stove. When it was hot, she'd grab it and iron as much as she could before it was too cold. The procedure would restart…. heat iron, use, and reheat. She ruined things — it the iron was too hot, the scorch marks came. My new iron has feet on it. When I let the handle go, it stands up – off the fabirc. — no more scorch marks…. It shuts itself off… About the only thing it doesn't do is move back and forth , Hey, maybe roomba should invent that ! An iron that only irons the fabric below. It would be able to stop at the edge of the board. It would regulate it's own heat……..

  44. I bought a very old but beautiful in it's day dining table and 6 chairs for $25. Spent lots of time sanding and painting them white and covered the chairs in a wine label print fabric. They were so beautiful.

  45. This ain't your grannie's gas stove any more…. wow, how far they have come in 60 years!

  46. Rebecca Newman says:

The best “this ain’t your granny’s makeover” item I’ve done is turning old quilted napkins into kitchen curtains by simply opening them up on the diagonal, pressing them with an iron, and then overlapping them and draping them over a curtain rod. Instant curtain!

  47. This wasn't much of a real makeover, but it's still my favorite. I have a walnut 50's-60's dining room hutch that I found at a thrift. We drilled holes in the back for chords, added new hardware and now use it as a tv stand. It has plenty of storage for all the movies, games and systems, it looks great and the scale is perfect for our large flat screen.

  48. @gr8escap says:

i'm hoping that it will be my reupholstered loveseat-i'm using an "old" quilt to cover the seat portion (that my dog un-upholstered for me).

  49. Ken D. says:

I love this great idea to spice up a blah display!!

  50. Lori Goodman says:

I found those old fashioned Gold Leaf branches in a thrift store for $3.00. I had some brushed nickel spray paint and repainted them and hung them over a window….Looks Great!!
