Black is Beautiful

I have a confession: I am currently having a love affair with the color black. (Please don’t tell my husband.) Rooms that embrace dark, moody hues are so appealing and right on trend for fall. I know it can be an intimidating color to put on your walls, but black has the power to change a room in so many different, positive ways. It can make a room feel intimate and cozy. And it can even add a bit of mystery to your space.

So you’re probably wondering, with all my talk of color the past few weeks, why black? We tend to think of white as the perfect neutral backdrop for splashes of color, yet black can be just as foundational. Black walls can work in a space the same way white walls do, just for different reasons. Instead of a neutral base, black creates a dramatic palette for showcasing your favorite colors. When using bright jewel tones, black brings colorful pieces to the forefront. And what could be more beautiful than that?

The bright colors in this living room stand out against the black walls and dark floor. The juxtaposition of light and dark turns this room into a celebration of eye-popping shades.

Black is utterly beautiful in traditional spaces, too. The artwork in this classic dining room comes to life, framed by the dark tone of the wall.

The cozy furnishings and accessories paired with the dark paint makes this a thoroughly intimate space, perfect for quiet reflection or a secret rendezvous.

Black has a big impact on small spaces, as well. In this room, the black walls and sheets let the emerald green throw take the spotlight.

When going black, what kind of paint and which hue should you choose? I recommend black chalkboard paint for the perfect shade. Its moody tone gives the rest of your palette the pop that you’re looking for without overwhelming the space. If you’re not quite ready to commit to black, gray or navy blue can be used to create similar effects. But if you’re looking for some drama, black is the gutsy design move that can take your spaces to new and thrilling places.

Now, by a show of hands, who’s still afraid of the dark?

  3. It's a color that you must be mentally ready for, it's not the the scary cats at all.

  4. I've seen black rooms which are just fabulous, expecially when they do the moldings too. The first time I saw it was on a house tour of a remodeled bungalow – not what you'd expect. It was completely classic not far out modern. In my last studio the entrance walls were Obsidian and it was unreal how many people asked for the color!
