Design wish list item #9 is more than just a wish; it would be an honor to own. Years ago, I saw the documentary The Quilts of Gee’s Bend. The story of these quilters and the images of their craft have stuck with me to this day. Here’s one of their spectacular works:

Jessie T. Pettway (b. 1929) Bars and string-pieced columns.

What was handiwork born of out necessity for six generations of women, descended from slaves and living in a poverty-stricken rural community in Alabama, is now recognized as quintessential American art. Their quilts have been displayed in museums around the world. While Pottery Barn’s Museum Craft Collection features replica quilts based on original designs that benefit the Gee’s Bend Foundation, original quilts can be purchased directly from The Gee’s Bend Collective.

That quilt is truly a piece of art — I would hang it on a wall in a prominent spot for all to admire! And I love the idea that purchasing one of these quilts also helps those in need. Great find!

Quite coincidentally, I was also looking at quilts yesterday. While not quite such a charitable purchase, I really love this colorful one from Company C:

They even offer sheet sets that compliment this quilt in a more subtle pattern:

    I just love brightly-colored accessories!

    thanks so much!
