L-O-V-E is in the air. Can you feel it? If not, don’t worry. You still have three days to fully prepare for Valentine’s Day and all the mushy goodness that comes with it. (We are not recommending the Bronx Zoo’s offer to name a Madagascar hissing cockroach after your loved one.) This year, I’m taking an unconventional approach to the holiday – no pink, no cartoon cupids, no lovesick puppies. (I’m sure my boyfriend will appreciate that, especially after our purple Christmas tree with cupcake ornaments.) Check out five of my favorite last-minute V-Day ideas you and your sweetheart will both love.

Valentine's Day Wooden Love Letters

I love these paper-covered wooden letters from HGTV.com. They’re easy to make and can be used to say a multitude of sweet nothings…”kiss me”, “xoxo”, “be mine”. Attach ribbon to the back and hang them over a headboard or on bathroom mirror for a morning surprise. Or prop them on the mantel for some living room lovin’.

Valentine's Day Cupcake Topper Labels

Everyone loves cupcakes, so make them super sweet for that special someone with these flirtatious handmade labels. We have the label template all ready for you, so simply download and decorate.

Valentine's Day DIY Brooch Button BouquetsLeft: This Is Glamorous, right: Kiddley

I love getting a fresh bouquet of flowers, but I don’t love how quickly they wilt and turn from enjoyable to depressing. These brooch and button bouquets are fun, quirky and last all year round. All you need is pliers, florist wire, buttons (or brooches) and a pretty vase according to these kid-friendly instructions.

Valentine's Day Heart Chocolate Cakesweet paul

Chocolate is the key to most hearts (it is to mine, at least), and this chocolate cake recipe is an absolute winner. Cut a heart out of paper, rest it on top of the cake and sift powdered sugar over it. It’s easy, delicious and can be whipped up in less than an hour.

Valentine's Day Scrapbook Paper Garland

Have some Valentine’s Day fun with your little ones crafting this pretty paper garland. All you need is colorful scrapbook paper, ribbon and a paper punch to create this festive beauty. Or use decorative paper, wrapping paper or plain brown paper…the possibilities are endless.
