Long gone are the tokens that used to be necessary for a ride on the New York City transit system. The new plastic Metrocards have their advantages, however.

Not only are they reusable, but if you’re an artist like Thomas McKean, they can be transformed into cityscapes, portraits or still life mosaics. Using only the cards themselves, McKean turned the otherwise unremarkable into impressive works of art.
