TED Initiatives sponsored a first-of-its-kind contest called Ads Worth Spreading. The ads submitted must offer pleasurable, intelligent engagement.

This winner is a global community service initiative by Dulux where they go into blighted neighborhoods around the world and join with teams of volunteers, donate the paint and make the neighborhoods beautiful again. Definitely an ad I’d watch again and again.

I visited Monet’s garden at Giverney last year.
As a horticulturist and Landscape designer, the garden design was on the surface not really anything exceptional; but the colour was spectacular and had the immediate impact of a four ton truck. As I looked closer though, subtleties energed in the way the garden was designed. I started to become unsure of whether the hard and soft landscaping were intentionally composed in a way that created subjects for Monet’s paintings; or if the images he painted around the garden were accidentally perfect subjects.

The star feature of the garden was no doubt the wonderful display of flower. It made me think that we so often make the mistake of trying to grow flowers that are our favourites, whether they are best suited to the site or not. The thing that was different here is that despite having many different flowers growing together; they were all ideal for the soil and environment, and all capable of growing and competing vigorously with each other. The choice of plants seemed perfect.
