I was disappointed too in the type of family that won.(nothing against them personally) I would have loved to see an older, maybe teenage or adult family win this beautiful home ideally set up for an outdoor/snowboarding,ski type adventurous family. I guess the home will need to be renovated to include a nursery/playroom/childproof kitchen, yard ect.. I agree that it shoud have gone to someone who really fits into this lifestyle that a drem home in Vermont would offer. Happy to see I wasn't alone on this view. However I sill wish the winners all the best in their new home. Jealous in NY

    • Alexis says:

that is exactly the kind of family my family is, i have a 11 year old sister, me (14) and a 16 year old brother. we love to ski and be outside.

    • MaryAnn says:

I understand i enter for this house for almost a month. I was dreaming bout wining this house for me and my children but hey hope things work out for us

    • LBird says:

      u are definately jealous.

    • Lbird says:

      u are definately jealous.

  3. Karen Dunham says:

BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING. Could they have been any more unexcited?!?!? Now I KNOW you must notify them before we see them being notified. Otherwise, they might not be home, or they would probably be in their pajamas, and momma would have a mask on her face. And at least that kid could have said HGTV! Would it have killed him to play along?!? And however do we know if they really go live in their home or sell everything.

    • david kidd says:

i might be wrong but i dont believe any of the winners are still living there. i live in st. marys, georgia where one of the dream homes is and it took a good while for anyone to buy it and actually live there. glad to see it though. i am also glad they upped the cash as the taxes on all these houses will eat you up. you almost have to be already wealthy to win and stay in it.

    • Emily says:

      I agree 100%!!! :)

  4. Jackie says:

The house went to the right people if you ask me. They looked like they could use everything they won!
What a great place to have your kids grow up in! I think sometimes people don't know how to react to things. But you know they were very greatful.

  5. Washingtonwoman says:

I am happy for the couple that won the house, car and cash. I wish it were me but I do not begrudge anyone for being fortunate enough to win such great prizes. I will keep entering the sweepstakes as I attempt to keep up with current home improvement idea on their web-site since it cost nothing to enter. Maybe one day I will be on the receiving end. Until then, congratulations to the young family that won and have fun on the slopes :-)

  6. JleighB says:

I pulled my boyfriend from the kitchen to see the "looks on the winners faces"… yeah, we were both sadly disappointed. I'm sorry but you just won a house that costs HOW MUCH? A new vehicle AND $500,000… and all we get is a smile and "this is great"… I understand they already knew they won but seriously you would have heard me from a mile away! Especially being on TV, lol.

  7. Linkay says:

    AWWWWWWFUUULLL!
We all enter these sweeps, full of excitment of the chance to win! We have our fantasies about the lifestyle, skiing, beautiful seasons, new friends, etc. We wait for THEE DAY and the winner is……
    Mr. and Mrs Duhhhh.
They will never move into that home.
They will never move out of the home their in……..not that couple.
    BOOORRIIIIIIIIIING!

  9. Andrea says:

I'm surprised by the comments posted here. The couple seemed shocked and maybe even a little shy from all the attention. I do not expect people to drop to their knees and weep with gratitude. This was a nice reveal from classy, normal people who do not feel the need to play act like the over-the-top people on Extreme Home Makeover. I liked their family and I think they reacted like any normal, non-desperate couple would. Good for them. I hope they get to vacation up there before they are forced to sell.

  10. Jacqueline says:

Does anyone know if the people who won the dream home have gone to see it yet? I have not found anything on the website about that. I wish them lots of luck! Good luck to everyone in the coming sweepstakes for the Greenhome and the blog cabin, also the dreamhome for 2012! I have so much fun entering these things! Good luck everybody!

  11. ellenyc says:

is just jealousy! Im glad for them,, and i hope be the next winner! jiji

  12. Jensen says:

oops I guess HGTV forgot to tell us you have to be an employee to actually enter the contest.

  13. ellbe says:

Doesn't matter who wins the house, nobody yet has been able to keep them. Can't pay the taxes. Why doesn't HGTV build a house for a normal person and give it away, so that the persons can afford to live there.

    • Wishingandpraying says:

Isn't that the truth!! How wonderful to win the dream home package but how sad that no one actually can afford to keep it. Build it in a place where the average person can move in, pay the taxes, and enjoy it! What I would give to win either way, but even more so to actually be able to live in the home.

  14. Kathi Miller says:

What did I miss? Did someone win already? An employee? that's against the rules, if anyone has bothered to read them.

  15. Jennifer says:

Doesn't matter how fixed or crooked things may be, when it comes to these dream and green homes. Massive amounts of people will always enter. So that small percentage of people who turn away don't even make the slightest difference at all. If that young family made an honest entry then I'm happy that they now have a little more money to raise their offspring with. If you really do need to be an HGTV employee to have a chance at 'winning' one of these 'prizes'…then go forth and apply for a job there. lol. Hurray for publicity.

  16. postalpuppy says:

Where does it say that one of them is an employee of HGTV?

  17. postalpuppy says:

Where does it state that one of them is an employee of HGTV?

  18. Rayanne says:

Lol the winner was not an employee at hgtv…….. The person who wrote the article Kayla is an employee read thoroughly before jumping to conclusions . No judgement here as to who won, it is what it is . How about a little more humbleness and a little less spite.

    • Brandon Phelps says:

Well said. Each of us has an idea how we would react to such news but until the reality hits us, we really have no idea what we'll do. I'm happy for them.

  19. Oli says:

    Good Luck this Yr Everyone!

  20. DGP says:

Enter twice a day,Cross your fingers and be happy for whom ever wins if it isn't you! If you cant afford to keep the house they will buy it back from you! Either way your a winner! Thank HGTV for such an opportunity!!

  21. Morris says:

How can't someone not be able to afford this home after winning 500k?

    • A Guest says:

Yes, that was my question too.

    • Dotty says:

taxes: 33.3-39% on market value of house, vehicle and the $500K. The value of the 2012Park City home is approx $2 million. The taxes on house alone will be above the cash winnings.

      • Vicki says:

It's not the taxes on the house, it's the taxes on the value of the prizes = house+car+cash….all taxable by the IRS as income. Now…as far as the property taxes go in Park City…look out…that has to be a killer. And, how can a normal person maintain such an abode – even if it is a green home I bet the heating costs are pretty high.

  22. ashari says:

please pray for me so i can be the next winner of this beautiful dream, thanks for those who will pray for me, it does not matter how you pray but just mention my name Ashari O Mahmud …thanks and many thanks

  23. Cannonmom says:

I know everyone is praying to win. What an amazing home they have this year!! Me personally, I'm praying hard as a Mom of 4 with family in Utah. I'm working as hard as I can to keep my little business alive. I'm basically the sole supporter of my family. My husband is suffering from PTSD after serving in the Utah National Guard for 32 years and being deployed, away from home for a total of 3 years. I look at that home and see calm. I see family time and friend time. I see stress out the window! I don't have a history of being a "winner" of things but I do pray that whoever does win realizes what a blessing they've received.

    • sweetredpepper says:

Good luck to you. You and your fam deserve to be blessed in a big way! Let your husband know, he is AMAZING and we are so lucky to have men like him who help us to stay free!

  24. Katie says:

I hope I win my family and I want this really bad ,I have been entering every day!

  25. M.M. says:

We would love to win this as well! Good luck to everyone! We hope that a well deserving family wins this home. I probably would have a heart attack as well as you T.T. LOL I would seriously hit the ground!!!!

  26. Terry says:

Winning this house would change my life for the better.I have a great live but would love to be a homeowner

  27. Katie says:

I wish everyone good luck, and I hope whoever wins really enjoys it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Lily says:

    i hoped i won but i didn't and i'm mad

  29. Terry says:

Wow how dis honest. 80 million entries to end up like this.

  30. hallal says:

i will be the winner this year…

  31. D Wilsin says:

It is my understanding that the house isn't being awrded until March so why are people already complaining. It does no good to tell your tales of woe ( we all have one, believe me I have a doozy), because the house is not chosent by who has the worst hard luck story. eveyone wants to win. I too hope it is someone desrving and no someone who already has a full and "rich" lifestyle. There are millions of deserving people that enter. Good luck all. I hope I am the winner, but am happy for whomever wins.

  32. Eden says:

My 8 year old son would always remind me to enter daily. He prayed daily and wish we will win. I guess children at that age understand how helpful it is to win this amazing sweepstakes for free. He said this is our only way to get out from being poor. I am taking a chance as anybody else!

  33. Jonathon Campbell says:

Good luck to all. I can't say enough, how enormous of a blessing this prize will be to whoever wins it. Good for you HGTV for putting something like this together, and for carrying it on for 15 years. Even aside from this sweepstakes, HGTV has, or has helped to, enrich the lives of so many. Deeds like this help people beleive in the genorosity that still exists in human nature. I could go on and on, but i'll leave it at that.

  34. Mary says:

I just told my daughter yesterday that I hope the person who wins the dream home is someone who really needs it, (like me. lol). Of course I would like to have been that person, but I was very happy to see that they seemed to need it, and it made me smile watching their dream come true!!!! God blessed them and I think they knew it!!!! Whether they move to Utah or not, this has changed their lives! Good for them. Very happy for them! :)

  35. Linda says:

Beautiful home … lucky people. Congratulations!

I sometimes look at these beautiful homes and wonder how great to live & own one of those. But soon I conclude that after paying the taxes on all the winnings you have some money left for the property taxes for the next several years.. It is wonderful that you have taken care of this problem with the cash give away… but then I start to think… does one really need a LUXURY home with all such expenses?

A luxury is a luxury… I would so love to own one… But there are so many people in need right now….

So I start to think about our collective situation economically in our country (included mine) & I start to wonder as I dream & think "out loud". Why not provide 5 smaller homes to 5 individuals or families instead of ONE humongous home for just one family.

Here I am just thinking: ….instead of building one home worth $900,000. why not build 5 regular homes that each is worth $150,000 (or 4 homes worth $200,000 each) with solar panels and all the goodies!. Plus some give away money…. and a car included! Just like you are doing now – but now you spread the wealth to different individuals providing real move livable & affordable homes… (property taxes can get expensive in these big homes).

A beautiful home of 1,200 to 1,600 square feet in my area near downtown Orlando would be ideal. A beautiful bungalow old Florida Vintage style would be so wonderful. (call me if you need advice.. I have the right setting in mind)

(I am just dreaming – thinking out loud if you are listening). There are even areas you can build a community …..!

With that said … I would nonetheless love to win a home (expensive or not). Too much hardship in my life… never been able to purchase one.

I appreciate all you all do.
Many blessing to you all and to everyone reading this. :)

  36. LH! says:

how do we edit our post?
    Thanks

  37. Linda says:

HGTV does treat the winners like royalty… wow!
    * I posted before suggesting building smaller homes that are more affordable – since these homes are so humongous utility expenses can be extreme.. not to mention property taxes. BUT the Green Home Giveaway in Georgia comes with solar panels (that takes care of major electric bills). And the amazing cash give-away can provide the money needed to pay taxes from such winnings to the IRS.

This home has it all, plus the cash & the car! I sure would love to win this home. I need it so bad… never been able to own one and living in rentals is so hard when you cannot afford a really nice more private (separate stand alone) home.

It is my dream to own my own home… God knows I deserve it. Whether I win the Georgia home or not I hope next winner is one that really needs a home. Too many people are in need right now.

    Many blessings to you all!

  38. Linda says:

The New Home Give Away in Serenbe Georgia…. is amazing?
The area is sweet. It is a self sustained community with their own organic farms. A level of safety, tranquility and pure wonder – It just feels right! I want it….!!!
I have a question though: does anyone know what property taxes would be on this home. I think in Georgia you only pay 40 percent of the value of the home in taxes. If the home is worth $600,000 you only pay taxes on $240,000 (such deduction is great). But can anyone tell me what percentage is paid on this deducted rate???
    Thanks and blessings!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Linda
I think you're using the word 'only' loosely here.

The house is valued at $700,000. [check the sweepstakes rules].
In Georgia, you are taxed on 40% of that home value which is $280,000 (700,000 times .40).
From that amount, you deduct any applicable exemptions (doubt you can come up with any.)
Therefore your taxable value is $280,000 or “280 thousands.” Then you have to take on count the county adopted millage rate of 8.45. (Fulton County).

Multiply your taxable value in thousands (280) by the millage rate. 280 times 10.8 equals 3.024; in other words, your county property tax equals $3,024. Please add this to the $280,000.
      http://www.fultoncountytaxes.org/fultoniwr/Millag

Then, this is not over since your tax bill is made up of several different millage rates. One above was just the county millage rate.
The state charges 0.25 mills; or an average of .30, not sure of that (multiply and add) then you may have a city rate, a school millage, a fire district millage, etc. You will have to do the calculation for each millage, then add the totals to determine your tax bill.

We're not taking on count the new vehicle taxes (also start by the assesed value of it, then continue with the new vehicle tax, etc, etc) , either the $100,000 dollar taxes, since it's a prize and *yes, the cash will get taxed and reduced*, [just like the lottery cash does when somebody wins it.]
Georgia state has an income tax of 6% and a federal income tax of 25% which are withheld from prizes of more than $5,000 at the time the prize is claimed.

That is a whooping 31% in taxes out of the 100,000 leaving you with $69.000 to pay for the house and the car taxes.

So you WILL NOT have but big red numbers coming to you. (in short, about $300,000+ to pay).

I still hope you win it since you seem to desire it so much.

      Love,
      Karen M.

      • Karen says:

Sorry bout the 8.45 is actually 10.8 , I did the right math down in all is just i didn't updated the 8.45 after typing it the first time.

        Love,
        Karen M.

does anyone know if the kitchen has a microwave or a dishwasher? and are there HOA fee's here?

This home is by far the best "GREEN HOME" constructed to date. From the location which was chosen, to the beautiful design that is captued in every inch of his home. Thank you HGTV you did it again, you gave us a home that is not only a "Palace", but one that is created from the finest raw material from the earth…
