I’ve killed more plants than I care to admit. (Apologies to the ficus presently dying in my living room.)

air ferns in glass bubbles by shane powers

But I feel like I might have a shot at keeping plants that survive on air alone alive. These particular air ferns are nestled in Shane Powers-designed glass bubbles from West Elm. The appeal here is that if by chance my brown thumb prevails, I would be left with a really lovely hanging sculpture.

  1. i'm horrible with plants, but these air plants look gorgeous suspended like that! my fiance has to do all the gardening. i've never been able to keep anything alive for more than a month.

I inherited a stupid ficus from the previous tenant and now I feel too guilty to let it die, but I dislike it enough to pamper it. So it gets just enough water to eke along, dropping leaves by the dozens. Feh. Maybe I'll go the air fern route instead; I actually *like* them.

Ha ha ha! That is exactly the situation my ficus is in. Inherited the beast, and I don't exactly shower it with love.

Thanks for the encouragement, Sara. Sadly, mine get in my house and immediately look and me and drop their leaves. Plant slayer!

  4. I decided not to do the hanging basket and let it remain on my table in easy reach. I did re-pot it into something larger, and I noticed the potting soil had quite a pit of charcoal and wood chippings. I saved most of that and integrated in into the new pot with the fresh soil. There was also an earthworm in the old pot! I only found the one,and I let him come into the new pot.Sound good.

My ficus was picky….didn't like ANYWHERE I placed it in my home. I finally gave up & planted it in my yard (in the 6 feet between our pool cage & our lake). It is now the most GORGEOUS tree…in just 3 years, it's taller than my house! Of course, I might add…I live on SW Florida!
