I’m the kind who trusts a friend’s opinion far more than a celeb endorsement. When Anna told me how much she adores Atlanta’s Farmer D Organics, I knew I would too. Farmer D’s makes and sells some of the richest, most sustainable compost, fertilizers and organic pest controls. But they are much more than an organic gardening store — Farmer D’s is part of a growing movement. Their site and blog are chock-full of useful information and inspiration if you’re looking to start your own biodynamic garden to feed your family and your community.

Farmer D Organics

Seeing as today is Earth Day, it’s appropriate that we’re giving away one of Farmer D’s Urban Planter Boxes. They’re made on site from sustainably-harvested red cedar, so you know they are good for the environment. (And smell delicious!) Leave us a comment before 12/11c Monday, April 25th to be entered for a chance to win.

This week’ question: How are you celebrating Earth Day? Putting in a rain barrel? Starting a bee hive? Planting a tree?

Oh, this is adorable! My roommate & I were just discussing how we were going to get a raised bed for growing our vegetables. We’ve got a perfect south-facing space behind our new apartment & this would be perfect because we can take it with us. We are already planning on starting a compost bin & purchasing a rain barrel for Earth Day. Yay Earth! :)

A friend of mine passed away this past week, and the memorial request was that in honor of her great love for this Earth, instead of flowers we would each plant a new pine tree in our various locations throughout the U.S. DC has one more pine tree now :)

  5. Maggie says:

It’s all about growing you own food to cut down on pesticides, travel and energy. I’m growing salad greens, herbs and strawberries now. Need to get more strawberries and my tomato plants this weekend. Maybe some hot peppers too?

I love this little planter! It looks like just the right size to let a child plant it and maintain it. All of our children have planted seeds this spring–both vegetables and flowers, and they are really excited about gardening!

  11. Gina says:

I hope I win this. I am starting a garden and want to grow some crops. This would definitely help me. I don’t watch as much tv, almost never now and I recycle everything I can. I even bring things from work home so I can recycle it, since I can’t at work.

  17. Debbie Saunders says:

Beautiful design. Any chance of having a copy of the plans posted?

  18. Mary says:

The timing on this is freaky. Just this morning I woke up with the idea of planting my garden near my backyard deck this year in hopes I’d pay more attention to it. Our raised beds right now are WAY in the back, beyond the fence, and I never go out there. Too much trouble as my dogs can’t go there with me. This will make things so much easier and more accessible. LOVE IT!

  19. I am recycling more and did plant some vegetables today.

  20. Jen Reimer says:

We’re installing our first rain barrel this year as well as a compost bin. We are also prepping a nursery for our first baby. Her room is completely green, no voc paint, Eco friendly carpeting, recycled furniture, organic matress and bedding. Whatever we can do to make the room safe for her and to lessen the impact on the environment. :)

I ordered a dozen plants for an herb garden in December. They finally arrived this week and I planted them in my favorite terra cotta pots. They are enjoying the spring temperatures and a little mist from the hose on my covered patio. My cats are already nibbing on the lemon grass. Right next to it is the chive plant. They definitely know the difference! I would love to have this beautiful planter for more herbs.
