While I tell my Mom how much I love her every day, I’m happy to spend an entire day letting her know how much I truly appreciate her. Mother’s Day gifts I made years ago include macaroni necklaces, tie-dye sand art sculptures, gorgeous artwork (from cartoon coloring books) and plastic bead bracelets. (Those necklaces and bracelets are still in her jewelry box!) Dad was always there to help position the sand art funnel or to hold up the other end of the necklace string, because he knew how important it was for these gifts to be perfect for Mom. So attention Dads, if you’re looking for kid-friendly handmade gifts to craft with your little ones, here are five of my favorites you’ll have fun making together.

This handmade “mom” banner is a pretty way to show mom much she’s loved on her special day. It’s easy to make, and with sweet, personalized messages handwritten on the back, she’ll treasure this keepsake for years to come.

A handmade gift basket is an ideal gift for moms with a favorite hobby. Is your mom known for her incredible baking skills? Whip up some of her favorite treats and include small surprises like cookie cutters, cloth napkins and vintage tins. Is her green thumb obvious from the street? Fill a basket with interesting gardening supplies, plants and seed packets.

Classic silhouette art, which has been around for centuries, is making a comeback. Modern moms will cherish this timeless memento. All you need is a digital camera, a computer and a printer … and you can create one-of-a-kind pieces of art in a snap.

To this day, I still think there’s nothing more memorable or special than a handmade card. I used to like making a big statement with neon-colored poster board folded in half, but I think these DIY cards are much prettier. So put those simple sewing skills to good use just for Mom.

Coloring and drawing disproportionate stick figures was my specialty as a child. Those priceless renderings can find a permanent home wrapped around glass cylinders. Let the kids create special drawings, wrap them around candle holders and give Mom a homemade candlelight dinner with a special touch.
If crafting isn’t your thing, head to HGTV.com’s MarketPlace for sweet gift ideas to show her how much you care. Hurry! Mother’s Day is only 11 days away!

Great ideas, I think I will have to try a few of these ideas this mothers day. I was planning on grilling butterflied beef tenderloin stuffed with fried plantains and gouda cheese and rosemary on my cousins private beach in Ocho Rios Jamaica for mothers day. However, i will try the candle idea during breakfast as shown in the picture above.

Rory, with that menu, I wish I was your mom! She's a lucky lady. And the candle is a sweet touch.
Rory:
You sound like one in a million sons! You are indeed verrrry special and I'm sure you mom appreciates it.I make exquisite(other people's desciptions) greeting cards all by hand and I would
be happy to make a very personalised card from you to your mom…worded exactly as you specify.
And again…all by hand…not computer.
Hey Rory,
If you are looking for a second mom, keep me in mind……your mom is a very lucky lady!
I love these ideas, especially the gift baskets. Lately gift baskets have been my go-to for holidays and birthdays (like these Thank You buckets: http://www.ahappyplacecalledhome.com/home/2011/3/…. I'm tossing around this idea for Mother's Day of a "Penny for Your Thoughts" theme. I have tons of pennies, and I was thinking it might be cute to attach thoughts like, "love, happiness, harmony, kindness, laughter, etc." to the pennies and display them in a glass canister. Any thoughts for embellishments?
Rory can i have the recipe to your tenderloin stuffed with fried plantaind and gouda cheese??

Thank you!
Rory – My husband I went to "Couples" in Ocho Rios twice. How beautiful it is in Jamaica!! What a lovely way to celebrate Mom's Day – on a private beach, and what a great meal you have planned! I, too, would like your recipe. Jean Lehnert, Cincinnati, Ohio (tlehnert@cinci.rr.com)
My daughter made me a website, which was pretty neat. It was on isTheBestMomEver.com and you can make a personal website and write some really nice things for your mom! She said it doesn't take very long, too.
Handmade gifts are more special to your mom. Your mom will really appreciate your effort because you spend your valuable time in order to make your mom happy. It will also be a great experience for you.
