Shopping for little kids can be extremely fun. No matter how many toys they already have, they’d still love to have as many as possible. The possibilities are endless! Adults are a different animal. Often, they don’t want anything, and you’re forced to buy something utilitarian that they really need (new make-up mirror, extension chord, oil change). Instead, to keep it fun, I like to dip into my list of “life’s little luxuries” when searching for a thoughtful and appreciative gift the recipient has no idea they want. My no-fail list includes lusciously scented soy candles from local boutiques, chocolate truffles and luxurious throws.

Alpaca Throw

These ultra soft, hand-loomed solid alpaca throws from the Canvas Home Store are exactly what I’m talking about. They’re probably not on someone’s birthday wish list, but they’re so luxurious, they’ll do more than just sit on the receiver’s shelf. Who wouldn’t love one of these? If that’s you, leave us a comment before 12/11c Monday, July 4 to be entered into the random drawing for one of these velvety-soft blankets.

This week’s question: What’s your go-to gift for the person who has everything? Specialty coffee from a local roaster? A comfy, luxurious throw? Rich hand cream from your favorite spa?

When I am at a loss for a gift I buy a beautiful basket and fill it with local gifts. Around here in Western NY is would be maple syrup, homemade sausage and buckwheat pancake mix. I would also add bottled buffalo wing sauce from the Anchor Bar, Oliver's candy and anything homemade – cookies, jams, etc.

Everyone always enjoys receiving gifts from local vendors or craftsmen.

I consider a piece of artwork related to something they like. Gift baskets from their hometown…with hometown products are nice. Gift certificates to places they often go. Adopt a whale, mustang or other animal they can visit and track online…fun! Really tough person to buy for…..give a certificate of time. Do whatever they want for an afternoon or day. Take them on errands…have lunch..go to a movie…help them with some chores. Different and could be so appreciated.

For the person who has everything? A home made dinner with a bottle of good wine (doesn't have to mean expensive) and a nice fruited dessert. That always does the trick. Once I wrapped up my overabundance of zuchinni and gave it as a joke. Now she asks for them every year. Go figure.

I deliver them on a "flea market find" dish or basket so the recipient doesn't have to worry about returning it and will have a nice memory of the gift!

for the person who has everything…. I make them something- either art or food – but it would have to be someting with meaning for them– like their favorite meal or a photograph from their childhood refurbished or something that they loved transferred to canvas. ( like a vacation spot or first home)

  40. melba says:

I find a ribbon wrapped set of handmade notecards makes almost everyone happy! (Or a personalized, small scrapbook matching their personality or favorite hobby.)

  41. Tracy Ronnermann says:

My favorite gift used to be homemade baked goods. Especially for working folk who don't have time or inkling for such things…But then I saw that most were not eating them because of calories :( so I switched to a small houseplant grown from one of my own..but imagine those same busy people with living plants, not pretty…so now I give "gift certificates" for a night out to catch up, movie, drinks depending on the friend. It has worked out fairly well.

I would love the alpaca blanket for watching HGTV in my chair since it get cold with the priuce of heating oil.

    Thx!!!!

Whether it is a homemade gift of baked breads or cookies (smells yummy!), the scent of a wonderful soy candle to put where ever you want (also smells yummy) or a meaningful picture or photograph in a unique picture frame. These are things I too would always enjoy and welcome as gifts (hint-hint).

  50. Ken says:

Your TV programming is becoming so damn boring, that I have to say, If you don't diversify, then your audience will seek other forms of entertainment. What happen to the Garden Guy? The other aspects of entertainments you used to televise that entertained us? Seems now its all about the house, with nothing educational in the content. The Garden Guy at least taught us how to plant and when. These shows you present now tell us how to fix a home up to be ready to be made for sale. Screw that, it’s the buyer who decides what they want, not the seller. Why should the seller fix a home up for the buyer outside maintenance issues? If you’re the buyer, and you see potential in the home, then fix it up the way you want it, don't expect the seller to do it for you. If the seller never felt the need for granite counter tops, then why do they have to leave it for the buyer and have them installed. Damn-it, if you want granite counter tops as a buyer, then you put them in!

Bath rooms. I’ve seen some shows that claim 50,000 dollars to have a new bath room installed. This for a room that is 1/20th the size of the rest of the house. If a house cost 250-350 thousand dollars then explain to me how a single room 1/20th the size of the rest of the house costs ¼ to 1/5th the total cost of the home. NOT REALISTIC! A toilet, bath tub, shower, sink and cabinets can be bought for less than 2000.00 dollars. Where does the other 48,000 dollars go?
