Our Guest Bedroom (aka The Den of Dismay): Before & After!

When Ken and I first moved into our humble Indiana home, we knew we were in it for the long haul. After all, one of the spare bedrooms looked like this:

Guest Bedroom Before - Erin Loechner

Ewwwww.

We liked to call it our “den of dismay”. It smelled of depression and was far from guest-worthy, yet we knew it wouldn’t be much of a priority until move in day. Thus, a year later, we just recently decided to tackle the project. Our plans were to brighten the space with plenty of white paint, monochromatic art and simple bedding. Fortunately, we had a lot of the pieces on hand and opted to keep the space relatively inexpensive. Ready for the reveal?

Guest Bedroom After - Erin Loechner

Highly guest-worthy!

We’re thrilled with the result (don’t you love those pillows and the art?) and we can’t wait to welcome our first guests into the (almost) finished space! Of course, there are a few things left to do: install closet doors, a lighting solution, additional window treatments and a few personal touches, but we’re thrilled with any progress we can get.

  10. Black & white is très chic! Reminds me of the elegant decor in Black Swan.

  11. Those black and white pillows have me green with envy! I would love to stay in that room, but you'd better make sure to check my suitcase before I leave to ensure that you still have your decorative pillows! ;)

  17. I'm sorry but I just don't get black and white…..boring and just
not restful at all to me. The only positive thing I can say is better
than before pic. But I'd feel like a robot in this room.

  18. Erin, I'm sorry, but it almost seems too bright. I'm not feeling warmth through the picture. Don't get me wrong, you did a fabulous job, but even with the gray/black, it seems almost sterile and "sharp". Can you help me understand where the warmth comes in…is it just the picture? I'm getting the contemporary feel, rather than the cozy/comfy feel. (Can I still come over for burgers?)

  19. No comment on style–everyone is entitled to what they consider comfort and warmth. Its a great start but like you said it needs "some touches". Personally, I'm trying to find the dismay factor. It appears the only thing you needed to remove was the window covering, assuming you took that picture before you truly did anything to the room. I am a bit puzzled why it took a year to paint and lay carpet unless it was a financial situation. Painting that small room could be done with a single bucket of paint from Walmart in a day. Home Depot will within 48 hrs of purchase of in-house carpet stock lay carpet in 48 hrs. You indicated you had most of the items already. It appears that a trip to Ikea pretty much did the room. The bed furnishings appear to be French Provincial that has been repainted white. The focus is all on that wall–what about the rest of the room? The window seems to face another house–what about guest privacy? It seems that would be a priority. Might I suggest a surprise by adding a "hot" color to pop the B &W and warm-up the place. I love to see the final results! When you get the window ready for privacy–I'm visiting.

  20. A great change!!! The photos at the wall are revealing the artistic taste of yours. The Black & White combination also gave a decent look to the room. I'll follow this kind of design next time for the remodeling of home, specially such specific room.
