Nothing brings a room together like a chandelier. The most sleepy of spaces instantly goes from lackluster to luxe with the addition of one of these quintessential light fixtures. The HGTV Design Happens crew wants to give your living room or dining room (heck – any room) a mini-makeover with designer chandeliers from Brooklyn-based lighting company Crystorama. Their classic designs hang from the ceilings of the US Supreme Court building and Constitution Hall.

This week’s question: What’s your best tip for giving a room a quick pick-me-up? A vase filled with fresh flowers? An accent wall in an “it” color? A bold piece of art? Or is it all about the lighting?

Well a fresh coat of paint never hurts :) . I would say the best way to freshen up a room is with either new throw pillows or curtains that go with the existing furniture in the room. It doesn't all necessarily need to be changed, just little things like maybe even new lamps or revamped end tables or maybe both if it's really stuffy. And if it's in the bedroom I would say new wall art or timeless wall art that makes you happy, and some new bedding always is awesome :) .

I love to personalize things with photos and quotes.

  3. Noel says:

A fresh new crisp rug can totally change the feel of a room. I'm also a big fan of greenery, or anything big, bold and natural (I recently brought home a giant birch tree branch for my living room).

  4. Linda says:

I love changing the window treatments: can be panels, or a scarf. Or even repainting the trim and molding in a room will brighten things up.

  5. Mona says:

    Add a few houseplants.

  6. TIFFANY says:

febreeze for sure! or new pillows can really change the look

  7. Amy S says:

First – you'll need a forklift. After all, even small rooms are heavy ! Seriously, a new rug makes all the difference. We just bought a zebra rug for our living room and it totally changed the look of the space.

  8. Holly G says:

I love the third chandelier as I think it fits in the best for a 200 year old home!

For freshening up a room quickly–I'd say dust, vacuum and de-clutter first. Don't forget to empty waste baskets! Once that's done, add something living, like a vase of flowers or greenery or even a fish bowl–with a fish, of course. For additional changes, change out slip covers and throw pillows or add some new ones. Open the window coverings to let in light..

each spring i bring out my collection of old bottles, fill them with fresh spring flowers. in the fall i change the flowers to an autumn color w/ silk arrangements. i then place these beauties on my window sills, desk top, dining table, or wherever a touch of spring or autumn is needed.

  10. cececu says:

    Accessorize! Create new focal point.

  11. Xandria says:

I think simply rearranging your furniture and adding a little something new is always fun and is a nice change. I enjoy updating my frames with black and white pictures with a little bit of color. It helps bring out other colors in the room you didn't even know were there. Being a poor college students has its perks! :)

  12. Kris says:

Lighting is so important! We moved into a beautiful home and the wall lighting was very nice but at night it was too dim. We had to add more just to be able to read.

  13. Amy says:

Anything that will add a new burst of color – depends on the room, but it might be pillows, a rug, seasonal decor (not necessarily holiday-related, but items that give the idea of spring, for example)… Color can always make an impact.

  14. Sandra F. says:

I like to use a nice throw and some new throw pillows. They're easy to change out and not to expensive. Fresh cut flowers are great to.

  15. KCriss says:

For a quick room pick me up, I try and appeal to the senses of sight, smell, and taste. Make sure the room is clean and the lighting suites the style of the room. Add some pillows with color to make the room pop as well as candles with nice scent to fit the feel of the room. Nothing to obnoxious, but noticable. Last is taste, we allways love some kind of food item out – whether it is seasonal fruit on the table or a plate of fresh cookies. When I have these three senses covered the room not only comes to life, but is a memorable experience.

  16. Alissa says:

I would have to say a bold accent wall – or even all the walls. Paint is really inexpensive, especially if you pick up a cool looking miss tint, and even doing one wall can add instant drama or change a mood. Plus, it's really easy to change!

  17. I like all three, but the one i like is the one with the shade and you can never have to many pillows .

  18. Carrie says:

My bedroom never felt so luxe till I hung a beautiful chandelier right outside my closet. I ended up with the room that had too small of a closet to shut the doors. So, I kept them open and placed my dresser to one side facing towards the center. Against the other open door is a padded sitting bench, and above the space just out side my closet hangs this chandelier. A very cozy and special place to get dressed every day.

  19. Pawin says:

What the heck! I use all three. In one room the accent wall does the trick. Viewed through the big picture window it's fantastic. In another room it's this chandelier that speeks. In another room personal art.and yet another I play with light. Some times I use a combination. I do itmy way.

  20. Katrina McClelland says:

I think the best way to give a room a "pick me up" is to paint an accent wall and have other things throughout the room – such a throw pillows, lamp shades, or picture frames – that match the color on the accent wall.

  21. Jennifer says:

Something handmade! A quilt or throw, a painting, or a hand-thrown vase. If you inject your personality into it it will definitely shine!

  22. Stacy says:

I like to see if I can rearrange the furniture to give the room a different look.

  23. Kari says:

Add color through flowers or change out photos in the frames you have

  24. Sam says:

A new piece of art. Whether crafted up by yourself or a great shopping find, it can give life and personality to a room.

  25. Robi says:

Add a beautiful crystal vase filled with hydrangea on top of a bevelled mirror really brings new life to a room. Watch the sun hit the mirror and throw color into the room.

  26. ABrown says:

Change the pillows and throws seasonally. Regroup accessories and change their locations. You may hear "I never noticed that before!" from your guests.

  27. Cameeela says:

I just fell in love with the modern Solaris Collection. The one shown above would fit right into my current office decor. :)

Also, the easiest way to spruce a room up is with a true cleaning and a handful of Party-lite votives. :)

  28. Angel says:

Move your furniture around. Gives the roo a whole new feel!

  29. Ann Marie says:

rearrange the furniture and decor topped off with a new paint color for the walls

  30. RedMolly250 says:

Even the most beautiful piece of artwork, colorful vase of flowers or lovely fresh coat of paint can't live up to its full potential without proper lighting. Our home is tucked under the shade of an enormous 70' tree. Well placed decorative lighting & proper bulb wattage is absolutely essential for our home, and any home.

  31. De-clutter! For me it is getting the toys out of the room and bringing it back to adult-land. That and and mixing up the accessories.

  32. Trish S. says:

I give rooms a quick pick me up by swapping out accessories & rotating in new items from things I've collected over the years. Often this is done seasonally. For instance, in the fall I put small pieces of pottery on my mantle, but usually want a lighter look for spring. It's a fun way to incorporate things I love into my home's decor without the house becoming overly cluttered.

  33. Ami M. says:

To give a room a quick pick me up I like to add artwork to the walls. That always seems to make the room look more complete. :)

  34. Meredith says:

To freshen up or change up a room, I like to use some personal art. I love to take pictures, so I usually find a snapshot that is current (i.e. Right now a beach scene) and develop it into a large print or canvas gallery print. Looking at the picture shows I personalized the room and reflects something I love!

  35. Priscilla Hoben says:

I like to use candles to give a quick pick me up to a room. I use candle that go in various candle holders from large thick candles to on fireplace to tall tapers on a dinning room table. They add ambiance and if scented a wonderful smell. I love to change candle to go with the seasons. They make my home warm and inviting.

  36. Linda Birkes-Lance says:

For quick change: extreme vacuuming including the ceiling and walls plus dusting, then rearrange all the fabric and all the accessories.
For major change: new paint color, rearrange room, new lamps and accessories, new throw pillows in new color.

  37. ivette gomez says:

My Mom taught us early on…you may not have much, but what you do have should be clean & pressed and you'll always be fresh. So, at the beginning of every season everything gets a good polish, shampoo or steam. If you are on a budget & changing curtins & pillows is not an option get seasonal pillow covers and remove some panels and tie them up on the side for spring & summer.

  38. Jane says:

    New lampshades..and new throw pillows

  39. Gayle says:

Definitely the lighting, paired with the right wall color.

  40. Jonathon says:

Add a focal point in the room, something that makes a person go "wow" when they enter. Murals add a lot, in the right setting.

  41. M. Kase says:

Nothing sparkles more in our livingroom than a fresh vase of flowers. It changes the entire look and add a lovely fragrance too. I love fresh flowers in anyroom

  42. Rita says:

Accessorize with your favorite accent colors and bring an area rug with those colors to harmonize the room. Think pillows, wall art, lamps, book case, books, shelves, window dressings, sculptures or antiques- anything goes!

  43. Mary W says:

Open the curtains and let the light shine in!

  44. Susanna says:

I like adding a little sparkle to a room. Sparkle can come in the form of a mirror, a crystal vase, a light fixture etc.–as long as light plays off of it, the room shines!

  45. Denise says:

I’m all about a pop of color through accessories–throw pillows or vases, especially.

  46. Cherisse Millet says:

Definitely adding fresh flowers to the room

  47. Karen B says:

Perking up my bedroom is the last on my list. The kids' rooms are done, the family room is done….. I have a plan, and a chandelier is in that plan. Celery walls, ivory mattlasse bedspread, plush chocolate throw, striped drapes in three types of green, gold, chocolate, and ivory. I have been collecting these items and ideas for 3 years now.
If you can picture this…… can you suggest anything else that might add a bit of glam? or something else?

  48. SydneyNK says:

I have certain pieces in my rooms that can be changed around with the seasons, or just if I feel like it! Pillows, candles, poutporri, etc. Changing some colors, textures, and accesories in a room is a great way to refresh it without completely redecorating.

  49. Callie says:

Change out the color scheme with fresh new in style colors- new paint and add in some nice bright accents like pillows and candles. For inspiration pick up a recent copy of Better Homes, Garden or Veranda etc.

  50. Cindy says:

When I'm tired of the way a room looks like I rearrange the furniture. I've seen shows on HGTV that show what a difference the funiture placement makes in a room and it really works. I think that is one of the best things that I could have learned!
