Nothing brings a room together like a chandelier. The most sleepy of spaces instantly goes from lackluster to luxe with the addition of one of these quintessential light fixtures. The HGTV Design Happens crew wants to give your living room or dining room (heck – any room) a mini-makeover with designer chandeliers from Brooklyn-based lighting company Crystorama. Their classic designs hang from the ceilings of the US Supreme Court building and Constitution Hall.

This week’s question: What’s your best tip for giving a room a quick pick-me-up? A vase filled with fresh flowers? An accent wall in an “it” color? A bold piece of art? Or is it all about the lighting?

I tend to move the furniture around a lot, it not only adds freshness to the room but I can get behind everything and clean out the dust.

  2. Jess says:

I think a new personal framed photo or color in the form of paint!

  3. Napakins says:

rearrange personal items, switch out photos into different frames, changes where the eye goes and makes the room feel different.

  4. JayKittle says:

Add color through painting an accent wall. Tri-color or quad-color vertical stripes on the wall with all the colors contrasting the color next to it. It adds a completely different feel to a room while making your space look taller than it is.

Lighting is also a good way give a room a quick pick me up. For a big space, a big chandelier can give your space what your looking for without filling the room with small accessories.

My fav pick-me-up for a room is to have seasonal accessories in
various colors that blend with the room. In summer, my toss pillows
are light and airy looking and a clear vase with fresh flowers repeats the
shades across the room. In fall, the pillow shades deepen, a coordinating
candle or a pottery base lamp is substituted for the flowers and I add a rug.
Christmas is the best – I have red, green, gold and silver accessories which
I blend differently every year depending on the overall scheme chosen.
Spring is bring-out-the-bright-time in pillows, crystal, lighter looking lamps, and
cotton or paler-toned rugs if any at all. I keep the same pix frames and rotate
inexpensive artwork that's new and fresh with whatever the season.

for starters, pick up a few toys that always seem to cover my floor!!

  9. Kate says:

For me, it's absolutely about the flowers! Lighting is a nice update when you are ready to make purchases, but flowers are a great way to change the atmosphere for just a few dollars, free if you have your own garden. Changing the flowers for different seasons or holidays is also a good way to help get in festive mood!

  10. Lindsey says:

Flower are great! For the kitchen a new centerpiece or tablecloth makes an easy change.

  11. JenAdele says:

I think the best way to add a fresh look to a room is mix up the patterns in subtle ways. I'm a grad student on a tight budget, so I have tried various ways of adding colors and patterns: sewing new pillows, adding wallpaper to small spaces, and chandelier decals on the bathroom door!

  12. Chris says:

I think lighting changes a room so much. No mater what the room lighting just jazzes it up.

Look at the room with a critical eye, eliminate the clutter and add a splash of color (in at least 3 areas scattered around the room, so it looks pulled together ).

We're rebuilding post housefire and i'm paying a lot more attention to light fixtures than ever before, the result of being hooked on HGTV. I LOVE the center chandelier (solaris collection)? Can you tell me where i can shop for these, assuming i'm not going to win one…

  22. Kristen Foster says:

    New throw pillows:)

  23. Elisha says:

CURTAINS. They add color AND texture to the room, and cover a large amount of wall without having to paint– that's important if you're a renter. Plus you can go a little funkier and fun with color and print since it's less permament that paint or wallpaper.

Cleaning and decluttering works, but SO much depends on lighting. I think lighting can make or sink a room.
All my lights are on dimmers and no matter what's happening in a room, being able to modulate the lighting, soften it or use it as a focal point is so important. Also a strong choice for floor covering changes things up. I recently put a colorful 4x 6 Indian mat on my kitchen floor (over hardwood) and it has made it look amazing, tying everything together (for $25!)

  25. Jen says:

Right now I'm on a plant kick, I find it's the best way to add life to a room

  26. Maureeng says:

I've used a lot of things that other commentators have suggested as a way to freshen up my decor and they all work. I also use a lot of personal items that add the "ME" to my home (for example–my dad's dental cabinet holds my table linens, candlesticks and napkin rings and the sign that hung outside his office for 37 years hangs above it ).
But I rotate these personal items so they don't get stale and so I can relive some great memories every time I put one away and bring out another. I smile every time I see the new personal touches.

  27. Lolo says:

Texture is extremely important for any space. You can take something from drab to fabulous by giving it some texture and character!

  28. Laura Turner says:

I love the one in the middle. It's screaming to come to my house for dinner. Wink wink

  29. Antoinette Brown says:

Always start with a thorough cleaning. Then re-arrange furniture and add seasonal color in accessories. Also changing picture arrangements and/or frames and for the finishing touch add some lighting — whether it's a couple of new sconces or a sparkling chandellier.

  30. Anna says:

My best quick pick-me-up for a room is to put something completely unexpected there…a colorful action figure does wonders for brightening and adding a bit of humor to a room!

  31. Jeanette says:

I'd say a new paint color but that never ends up being "quick" for me. Cleaning the windows makes a big difference.

  32. Toni Perry says:

A fresh coat of paint with a little pop of color!

  33. JALRI says:

The right paint color can do wonders for a room.Taking into consideration the amount of light in the room and choosing a color to brighten and add warmth to a room can really make a difference.

  34. Jennifer says:

Add color through a table runner, flowers, and candles in the evening. A perfect way to dress up a table for any season.

  35. Kim says:

Shop your house for furniture or accessories to use in a different room.

  36. Yvette says:

I love fresh flowers and a good deep cleaning! My home is small, so rearranging is difficult, but I will swap out accessories or simply rotate a table to give it a new perspective.

  37. CJLey says:

The best way to make a change is repurpose something you are thinking about getting rid of or selling in a garage sale. It adds a new piece of furniture that can be functional and beautiful, and it can add a great focal point to the room if you do it right. I had an old, plain wooden toy chest. It wasn't an antique, but it had magazine clippings glued all over it because when I was younger, I thought it looked cool. It really looked like a mess, and something I couldn't use anywhere. But with a little elbow grease, I ripped off the clippings, sanded like crazy, added some semi-gloss paint, replaced the rope handles with nice fabric, and now it's a gorgeous coffee table in our living room that displays my favorite centerpiece of the moment and also incorporates storage for all of our extra blankets in the living room!

  38. Cindy says:

A friend brought a huge bouquet of zinnias from her garden. I put them in a vase in the living room and the whole room fairly sings now!

  39. stephanie h says:

Lighting adds drama and personality to any room. The impact of lighting is often overlooked, by simply changing out light fixtures from the standard issue originally installed in a space to more unique and artistic pieces you can transform your room in a big way. Lighting is both beautiful and functional, so it is the ultimate accessory.

  40. Karen says:

candles, flowers, and new throw pillows.

  41. Deb says:

The quickest pick me up for a room are new colorful throw pillows followed by flowers from the garden. It doesn't hurt to have everything clean and sparkling but you said "quick", right?

  42. starkitten42 says:

shake things up and rearrange the furniture. and better yet, it's free!

  43. tfmeek says:

Flowers always makes a room a brighter place. Also, maybe new curtains!

  44. MaryAwes818 says:

Change drapes to a fresh light silk, update throw pillows, fresh flowers in kitchen, dinig room and bathrooms. Rearrange furniture for conversation. HIde the TV and open some wine!

  45. Ron Miller says:

    everything under the couch

  46. Beth says:

I think that the best way to change an entire room is to change the paint color on the walls. It is so cheap, easy, and feels so fresh. I love to make rooms feel brand new with a fresh coat of paint and transform them into something they were not before. Adding accent pieces like complementary pillows and artwork is always an afterthought for me. I love to do that as well, but the fresh paint is where it all begins! For me, paint color changes can make me think of a room as I have never thought of it before and I am often more likely to use it more frequently. I love adding complementary pieces like pillows and art, but those things are always an afterthought…for me it always starts with fresh paint to make a room feel new and different!

  47. vicki horn says:

I collect antique linens, so I use any reason to pull out a "new set" of linens and pillows. It completely changes the look, especially in the dining room.

  48. swanky style says:

Wow, these are so beautiful! I think good lighting is worth its weight in gold. Paint color, a close second.

  49. Carmen Ortiz says:

For me it is all about the lighting, because a proper lighting can change a room giving dimension and depth to it. You can complete this with a color accent wall, a vase of fresh flowers and lighting a bold piece of art as well, that will complete your decor.

  50. Kathleen G says:

Throws, flowers, repaint a picture frame, and rerrange some small furniture usually work!
