Trends come and go, but furniture designs with good bones and quality craftsmanship never go out of style. This week’s Freebie Friday celebrates classic American style with nautical flair. We partnered with luxury furniture company Somerset Bay to bring you a shabby chic chest — perfect for your entryway, bedroom or living room. This purveyor of fine home goods specializes in artful painted furniture — distressed solids in coastal shades like “Key Lime” and “Blueberry Crisp”, as well as hand-painted chinoiserie designs.

Shabby Chic Furniture

One Design Happens reader will take home this magnificent chest to adorn their home. To enter for a chance to win, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, August 15.

This week’s question: American style is hard to define — so many influences! What’s your favorite American design mecca? Modern Los Angeles? Historic Boston? Laid-back New Orleans?

I like Charleston, South Carolina. A little French, a little English, a little Colonial. Something for everyone in beautiful subdued colors

My mother taught me the meaning of an "eclectic" home, something I feel epitomizes American design. Married at the tale end of WWII when most furniture and other commercial goods were difficult to obtain, my mother had few style choices. I have followed her lead in decorating. If required to pick a particular venue, I'd have to say "New York" because the Metropolitan area is where my husband and I have found (or inherited) most of our furniture. We tend to like simple lines in either furniture or home accessories, another preference from my mom, who was delighted to be able to purchase the dishes designed by Russel Wright. While when purchasing new, we usually favor the furniture of the Arts & Crafts Movement or, more recently, Vermont-based Pompanoosuc Mills, we happily honor several family pieces with curvier lines. We also mix finishes. Somerset Bay's Painted Chest would be a lovely addition to our home. I admire the work of designer Eva Zeisel and could see this chest either next to one of her lounge chairs or topped by some of her pottery.

I am currently being inspired by the coastal/ beach design style. I love the laid back, yet cozy feel of the soft fresh colors and light touchable fabrics. I used to live on the Southern California coast and now that I am in Colorado, I want to bring that beach feel indoors so I can enjoy all of my favorites – the mountains and the beach. This chest would go perfect with my living room redesign. I even love the white coral on top!
