This project is definitely one of my favorites! Rob and I have two sets of twins, so we could totally relate to designing for triplets. One small Manhattan bedroom for three growing children forced us to get creative with how to lay out the space.

Home by Novogratz

Three kids means three beds. Space is going to be tight when you live in Manhattan, so we knew that we had to get one of the beds off the floor to maximize the room. We played around with different ways to do this, even toying with the idea of triple bunk beds. We ultimately ended up a custom design with one bed lofted and the two other beds sticking out perpendicular underneath.

Designing a room for both boys and girls is definitely tough, so it’s always good to mix it up with fun, bold colors that appeal to them both. The wall covered in decal dots, the comforters and the throw pillows make the room work for all three kids.

Home by Novogratz

You’ve probably seen some of our custom photography wallpaper in other episodes of Home by Novogratz. For this project we went big! We chose our favorite photograph of all three kids shot by fashion photographer Tim Geaney, blew it up to a huge scale and printed on canvas wallpaper. (The kids loved posing for Tim.) The result is bold and very cute. Because this is a rental apartment, we couldn’t do anything to the concrete ceiling. Since we really wanted to hang these amazing, colorful bungee cord lights, we came up with the idea of building out a soffit to house the electrical wires. Using shatter resistant light bulbs makes it extra safe.

To be honest, I don't understand why everyone liked this room so much. The room was not appealing to kids. If my kids room looked like that they would not be happy with me. It seemed that the room was more for the parents vs the children.

    • Moonbeam says:

So agree with you! The wallpaper was the only thing I liked. Hated the hanging lights, and they were not even centered over the photo, thus leaving one child's face clearly visible, but partially obsuring the other two. Meg was criticized on Design Star last week for not hanging her wall lanterns evenly, but these lights look much worse to me. Also, that top bunk looks dangerous to me. And those are just a few problems I see here. All in all, I think the room would be considered a competent job for an amateur, but certainly not what I expect from professionals.

    • nana lynn says:

No, kids love to see themselves and these children are beautiful. My 20 year old grand daughter's favorite thing to do when visiting is look at albums of herself when little. They will love it more the older they get. Nana lyn

      • Mimi says:

No they won't. You think your grandkids are cute, but when they are a couple years older, they won't want to look at their 3 year old faces.

    • Alison says:

I totally agree with you! I am not impressed with the Novogratzes at all. I feel like I could do better- there is not enough accessorizing in any of their projects, like they are working on a very limited budget. The loft bed could have looked much more professionally done- it looks like my 16 year old built it! And where is the storage? Cubbies, shelves, under the bed storage? 3 kids in one room means lots of storage needs!

  7. Deb says:

I saw a lot of missed opportunity with this room . I am not a designer but I am a mom and I have decorated every room in my house. You have 7 kids and you hang exposed bulbs in a room for three four year olds wiith a stool and desk underneath for them to climb up on, OOCH I see someone getting burned or cut in the future. Also with such little space you totally ignored the closet and its doors. Three kids that age don't need alot of hanging space but could use alot of built in storage for toys and clothes. And why we are talking closets why not make those ugly doors maybe one a dry erase board and the other a chalk board. My last thing is although the art work was OK why hang it with glass in the one place where kids are climbing in and out of bed maybe plexiglass would have been safer.

    • Moonbeam says:

I wasn't impressed, either, but don't worry about the lights being hot or breaking. The Novogratz explained they were shatterproof and the kind that don't become hot. I'd be more worried that one of the kids would stand on the chair or desk and grab one of them in an effort to swing from it, bringing the whole light structure crashing down. Also, the lights obscured the childen's faces. Tract lighting or spotlighting would have worked better. OR, overhead LED lights that can change colors and cast different shades of lighting over the wallpaper (similar to what D-Bro's team did for the couple's headboard in the Color Splash episode immediately preceding Novogratz last night. Loved your idea of chalkboard and erase board on the closet doors. Agree the purchased art piece was not a good idea: a waste of money IMO and possible hazard. The most obvious hazard to me was the top bunk and lack of head and foot railing for such a young child.

      • Deb says:

they were shatterproof but she said they were only 30 watt so they wouldnt be hot All lightbulbs get hot and can burn a childs face my daughter did when she was a toddler she had to put it next to her cheek.. That light fixture would be better in a teenager's room .Agree on the lighting ideas you had. Would have liked the top bunk to have maybe some cubbie space at the end instead of the mattress sliding back and forth.

  8. Wanda Brown says:

I totally love the wallpaper! When the lights were turned on & those little faces were illuminated, it was just breathtaking!

    • Moonbeam says:

Loved the highlighted faces too, but would have preferred they used an overhead tract or spotlight of some kind, and not those goofy hanging lights that partially obscured the kids faces.

  9. Stephanie Walters says:

Where did the wallpaper come from? LOVE IT!!!

  10. Henrietta says:

I loved the position of the three beds. Loved the wall paper. Wonder how much it cost.

    • Lorre Lei says:

Henrietta, I don't know how much the mural cost but keep in mind you have to also factor in the photographer's charge and child photographers are a real specialty art and not inexpensive. A suggestion would be to take your own photos (lots), select the best, and upload to a company that can then reproduce them as a mural to your deminsions for your wall space. And DO use a substrate that can be removed without damaging your walls if you ever move and also reinstalled in another space.

  11. Lorre Lei says:

I can't think of anyone better to select to design a room for children than Cortney and Robert. With utilizing space for their 7, they've had oodles of experience. The photo mural of the triplets just "made" the space for me…very photogenic subjects and talented photographer. I'd like to suggest that a mural imprinted on a repositionable, removable and reusable vinyl with a pressure sensitive substrate would be easy to clean and portable if they ever move. I'm sure they wouldn't want to leave that behind.

    • Moonbeam says:

Good idea to have it removable. The wallpaper was the only thing I liked about this room. They were adorable, photogenic children and the photographer did indeed do a good job.

  12. Marsh says:

I love, love the decals! I have been trying to come up with something for my 2 yr. olds wall that his bunk beds are up against. The decals are a perfect option. The idea of dots or shapes in general are much better than a specific theme that you would be locked into for awhile. Thanks Cortney & Rob!!! Love watching your show. Where do I get the dot decals???

    • Moonbeam says:

Thoughts those decals were cheap/cheesy looking and, while decals were a good idea, they could have come up with some that were more interesting, I would think.

      • Moonbeam says:

On second thought, and after looking at them again, perhaps any decals less simple would have clashed with the decor and the simple round ones were the best choice.

  13. Lara says:

I agree with some of you, this room leaves so much to desire! It looks incomplete to me! I am really doubting the design aesthetic of this duo! I love the Novogratz but once again I am disappointed :(

    • Moonbeam says:

Yes, I am disappointed too. I am not a professional but could have done a better job. Just goes to show you that some of us have talent we don't have the courage to take to a professional level, whereas some people seem to have more courage than talent.

  14. Blondie says:

I must say that I really loved the design. The designers made a very, very small space for 3 children very cozy and practical. I'm annoyed by all the comments Moonbeam made. . . you said it best "I'm not a professional", that says it all.

    • chrissy says:

Im sorry but I have to agree with other when I say this room def looks bare i woulda dressed it up a bit more as well it seems a bit incomplete to me as well I have to agree with Moonbeam. I don't mean to be rude but I haven't really ever liked their designs…they're just wierd and I like wierd things normally. Seems like they just throw a bunch of crap together and hope for crap soup? I can tell you this though my daughter would never spend time in this room.

  15. Sarah Wise says:

I like the simplicity of this, and with limited space and both boys and girls I guess this was not the easiest project. I like this combo: http://www.bunk-beds-and-loft-beds.com/twin-bunk-
But ist is expensive and needs a good deal of space to work.

  16. Scott Janke says:

    Good Shopping!!

  17. Leigh says:

Does anyone know the name of the contractor who made the beds?

  18. decorate4u says:

Am I missing something??? I have not been impressed with anything this couple has done. I think part of their slogan "we hope people will open up a bottle of wine and decorate" is very fitting because it looks like they had too much wine and started trying to decorate. Come on HGTV you can do better than these 2!!!

    • ashley says:

I agree! The way HGTV is so selective on Design Star, how come they aren't selective with what this couple does? I haven't seen one room that I like that they have done, often everything clashes and looks tacky to me. As guest judges on "Design Star" the Novogratz said "there are no rules to design" so if that is so, how can they be picked to judge if there are "no rules?"

  19. Rachel says:

Having young triplets (2 girls, 1 boy) myself, this room does not appeal to me on so many levels. The 2 beds are RIGHT next to each other. I would have preferred to offset one of the beds to parallel with the lofted one. The dots are kind of boring, as another said the closet doors are totally unutilized. I'd rip one door off and do a cubicle type design & do cork on the other door. There are so many cute decals more age appropriate for 4 yr olds that can be taken off and replaced in a few yrs.

  20. AEC says:

Seriously? Exposed light bulbs?? I couldn't get past that. I don't care how "shatterproof" they are. These are young kids. They will climb on the stools, star playing with the bulbs, etc. This room was very amateurish. What's more, kids don't want to see images of themselves younger than they are … and they grow up fast. Parents of 7 kids would know these things.

I honestly can't believe they have a show! They do the same techniques (photographic wallpaper) since they first appeared on TV.

  21. HMB says:

The hightlight and only hightlight of this room was the wall mural. The rest was not of a designer caliber in my opinion. I have seen a few episodes of The Novograzts and like Decorate4u, I found their talent to be less then what I thought HGTV's level of expectation would be.

  22. Jennifer says:

My complaint about this room is how long are those kids going to want to look at their 3 year old selves on the wall. I'm pretty sure that in 2 or 3 years they are going to ask to change that. Maybe if you're rich enough, you don't think twice about redecorating every 2 years but most of us need our rooms, even our kid's rooms to be relevant longer than that.

  23. Maggie says:

I am soooo totally unimpressed by the designs I've seen the Novogratzes come up with. Why are they on HGTV? What are their credentials other than lots of kids? You started out with such inspired and inspiring designers and now we're down to David, the two ditzy women and this couple. It still beats network TV and when I get a bellyful of politics and bad news, it beats the cable news networks. However, my patience is waning.

  24. Nana Lynn says:

The polka dots are cute. but get rid of the pink. Boys do not like pink, but girls do like blue. Love the colors of the bedding. not to girlish or to boyish. I have 12 grandkids ranging from 10 mo to 20 years. 9 girls and 3 boys. I went with a beach theme and they all relate, they love the blues and greens, flip flops and sea creatures ( but not cartoonish) ones. It is hard when you are dealing with the two sexes and so much of a age range I go with nature themes as you can not go wrong, we all are part of the nature around us. man, woman, boy, girl, and infant. It is harder than one thinks. nanalyn

  25. HMB says:

hey, where is my comment which I posted 4 hours ago or more.?

  26. jane says:

Cortney, love your show, but it's pronounced "pillow"–not "pellow." Just had to get that off my chest.

  27. Linda says:

If all these people who criticize this couple were such hot decorators they would have their own shows! Come on–what ever happened to teaching your children anything–like not to hang off their lights etc!! If more parents spent more time with their children they wouldn't have to be using their bedrooms for "activity centers" and would enjoy what this talented couple has done! Good job-very unique!!

    • summer says:

Really? I see a small room with zero imagination other than the wallpaper. People are entitled to their opinion and they are not wrong. These folks are very overrated, I don't get it.

  28. Mimi says:

From what we've seen so far, it looks like the Novogratzs have their kids do the designing for them. Take a look at their Summer House episode with all the random application of yellow over the filthy, rotten exterior. Spray painting a garden gnome– wow. I'm not sure what looks more ridiculous, their design aesthetic or Robert's truly tragic habit of dressing/styling his hair like he thinks he's 30 years younger than he is. Skinny hipster jeans on a paunchy middle aged man– not cute.

  29. Tiff says:

I just LOVE the wall mural! Where can I purchase this for my home! Thanks for the ideas….

  30. carlie11 says:

Novogratz's consistently appear to leave out steps that those competing on Design Star would be faulted for. Why not paint the unpainted wood on the furniture? The opportunities for climbing and accidents from climbing in this kids bedroom are too abundant. I do like the wallpaper. I am not a fan of the Novogratz's but watch hoping that they will finally make a project look complete. As an aside, I wish they would both look a little more put together, busy lives I understand, but they are before a camera and a little effort goes a long way.

  31. CherylM. says:

Where is this room child friendly?? I can't think of any child that would want to spend time in this room. It is awful. The beds are too close together, the exposed light bulbs, glass in the frame… etc etc. These are very young children and safe guards should be used. The Novograts need to be CANCELED.

  32. Laura Newman says:

LOVE the photo mural.. I've worked with Tim on many fashion shoots! small world!

  33. Debby says:

It seems the beds are blocking part of the closet. The room has a dormitory layout. Sad.

  34. kathleenincolorado says:

Another awful room and amateurish design. Why do these 2 even have a show?

  35. Adrienne says:

Love this room. Would love to know the dimensions of the loft/bunk bed??

  36. Christina Rodriguez says:

They do need to come up with some new ideas. They just keep trotting out the same old stuff. I'm surprised they didn't do light boxes.

  37. Collette Morningstar says:

This was truley the worst design I have ever seen on HGTV. Uninspiring and cheap decorations. It seemed the designer was more focused on name-dropping with the photograher and the Artist than her work. TACKY! The woods in the bedrooms did not match…popcorn ceiling that she did nothing about…the room also had no covers over the outlets. She really could have played a bit on the details. She did nothing to change out the old hardware and replace with something fun and fresh!

  38. Collette Morningstar says:

A few minutes ago I had put some comments that I did not like the designer or her work,,,I also had said some important elements on how to make it creative and fun and somebody had deleted my post…as did someone had deleted the post of someone right before me…I did not say anything inappropiate , just picking out facts..Now I am writing to head of the company for HGTV…I am telling them somebody keeps deleting the posts…the posts are for all to see, not for one persons discretion.

  39. Mike says:

That room looks great. The custom wall mural graphics are a brilliant idea!

  40. kiah says:

i just love to see a bed that is so cool.
