Love reading your newspaper around the kitchen table at breakfast? How about reading your newspaper on the kitchen table at breakfast? That’s the idea that The New York Times Company’s R&D Lab is developing right now. You won’t believe this demo video!

It’s like having a giant touchscreen smartphone as your tabletop, plus some added slickness for this context, like the ability to share articles with other family members sitting at the table. The table even detects when items are placed on it, which leads to some cheeky advertising (like a Starbucks ad cleverly popping up underneath the bottom of your coffee mug).  Would you love a high-tech table like this? Or do you prefer your Kitchen Table Version 1.0?

If I was single, I think I would love this. But in a family situation, would it be a conversation starter or reducer?
Someday, I wonder if we'll have giant ones covering a whole wall. Then it will be like the Ray Bradbury short story "The Veldt."

    • John says:

Anna, props for the Bradbury reference! And a creepy one at that… And I agree that we already have enough conversation reducers in our lives; give me solid wood between me and my breakfast mates, please! ('Course, I'm a custom furniture maker, so I'm biased…)

      • anna@HGTV.com says:

Yay, another Bradbury fan! Isn't Bradbury an interesting read from a sci-fi and a futuristic design coming true now perspective? Well, hopefully not The Veldt.

  3. ZanyMe says:

No way! We already make everyone in the family put away their smartphones during meal times. I can't imagine having a smarttable! It would drive me nuts.

  4. Ian Thompson says:

I would love it for the wife and I but no way for the children, it can take 2 hours for a meal time without distractions. And having 5 kids I can only imagine the arguments it would cause. Still i can dream about one. If you are interested in making your kitchen brighter visit http://www.kitchensplashbacktiles.org for some ideas.

It's not nearly as amazing as this, but the tech center here at HGTV HQ has an interactive gaming coffee table with touchscreen chess and other digital fun.

  7. Marianne@HGTV says:

I like this in theory, but maybe more for a desk than a family table. My kiddo hogs my iPad as it is!

  8. Rolling Kitchen says:

We all know that technology plays a major role in everybody's life and in this era of global communication, kitchen is also not spared.

This table is a great invention for those not free total busy type. Otherwise, most of the people still believes in dining without any distraction excluding speaking to family. This saga of modernization on anything is a never-ending process and we also need to be updated on modernized kitchen concepts, as shown by Rolling kitchen Island.

  10. Jeane says:

and another NEW RUDE….. no one talks any more with out some device in there hands, new we will just eat and play…. I think I am either to old or just enjoy family????

  11. Diane says:

I hate it. Families have too much media in the way as it is.

  12. Eva says:

I love technology but I can't see this fitting into a typical kitchen setting in a home. For one thing, it would be hard to read and hard on the back unless you are standing up, Leaves little room for actually eating . One of those great novelty items that would soon loose its appeal. In a business setting it could be put to use.

  13. Claudia says:

Horrible idea. Think of what it does to your digestive system?

  14. Nelda says:

Not necessary. Call me old fashion but meals are family time.

  15. candace says:

Wow what a horrible idea.Just listen to how it is being described and introduce — soulless. The kitchen is the soul of the house to nurture you with food to be healthy. Why would anyone want to take away from natural energy and time with your family to find out what they have experienced that day.

  16. Chels says:

    Yups, horrible! Pro Family!!!
