You know that sound you just heard? That’s the same sound I heard when I first laid eyes on this week’s Freebie Friday. My jaw hitting the ground. (I’m trying not to drool on my keyboard as I craft this post.)

Some of us are blessed to inherit a family heirloom passed down through generations. Others of us may have the opportunity to gift a loved one a newly made unique piece of handcrafted or couture-quality furniture that is an instant heirloom. I think an heirloom is something you treasure because it was owned and passed down by someone you love. It's not about money or value….it's about love.

  2. Susan says:

An heirloom is some thing that has been in your family for years and years, if not for generations, and it has more heart value than money value.

Anything that has real sentimental meaning, I would consider as an heirloom. Especially if it was a gift from someone you treasure! : )

  5. A heirloom is something that had meaning for your ancestor whether it was a piece of furniture or other household item that they kept in a special place where they could enjoy it everyday and wanted their children and children's children to enjoy as much they did through their lifetime. A memory, a gift. Wow this piece is just stunning.

An heirloom has a story to tell. That story lives on as it is passed from generation to generation.

something that has been around for many many years……. well taken care of, unique and of utmost important to its rightful owner……. something to put on display, showcase and be proud of…… that's how I describe an heirloom.

An heirloom is a beloved piece of furniture or decorating item that is given from someone that means so much to you that it makes the possession special only because of the one person giving it to you.

My ideal heirloom would be French or Italian! I lived in Italy as a little girl and now I'm married to a Frenchman. I adore some of the pieces that belong to his family. I have a funny story about his family's heirlooms. About 50 years ago, my husband's father decided to invest in some affordable art for his six children. He went to a local art broker and was shown pieces from two very different artists; one artist was very modern and abstract and the second artist painted portraits of peasants from the French Countryside. My future father-in-law selected the 2nd artist, as the images reminded him of his childhood in Burgundy. He invested in six paintings and we proudly display our heirloom in our living room tonight. Guess who painted the abstract art that he passed on? Pablo Picasso!!!!!!

OK: I adore the Venetian chest and would be thrilled to begin a new tradition of heirlooms!

What defines an heirloom to me? The history behind the piece of furniture age. Wherther it came from family or just a yard sale, estate sale it has a story. It may have markings that came with it and I'm sure it will new ones. The kind of material it is made with tells alot about a piece and maybe more about where it came from. I love old pieces. I also like this chest.
