I think it's a sheep comb! (I guess…I don't know…maybe)
It could be a cotton comb or a grain comb that seperates grain from shaft.
Hmmm. It has a handle, so it's portable.
The handle indicates that you can hold it in the gap (spikes flat and facing forward) or perhaps by the long skinny pit (vertial, spikes facing downwards).
It is able to sit upright.
There is area for something to fit between the spikes and the handle.
The spikes must be needed, otherwise there would be a flat top.
The gaps between the spikes are too small to allow toast, and somehow I'm doubting napkins.
If the sides didn't go all the way up, I would think it's a mass-marshmallow-toaster.
I'm going with an old fasioned cranberry harvester! The gaps between the spikes allow the water to go through but keep the cranberries in. The spikes help separate the cranberries from the green weedy bits.
Yes, you have it right. My mom was from New England & we grew up w/ one in our home as a memory of her childhood.
This is used in cranberry harvesting.
blueberry picker. or for berry-picking of some sort with thorns.
Some kind of scoop.
I like the cranberry harvesting idea… I'll go with that too!
It's a cranberry scooper.
I think this is a blueberry scooper/picker
This has been bothering me all day. I have come up with an alternative to a cranberry harvestor…
A LICE COLLECTOR!
For those poor schoolkids, back in the day before all the proper lice shampoos etc. Hope one of them is right!
A scoop for the cat box?? Pretty nasty, but pretty possible as well.

I think Mizzy had it right. For cranberry scooping.
