Growing up, the first thrill and chill of Halloween was when my mother brought decorations down from the attic, and the first to go up was a set of glow-in-the-dark giant paper skeletons my brother and I would hang on our bedroom doors, their bony arms and legs posed however we liked. To get our Design Happens readers ready for October 31st, we’re giving away four Fridays of awesomely frightful Halloween decorations from Grandin Road.

This week’s prize is their Animated Halloween Haunted Magic Mirror. It looks like an elegant mirror from a haunted castle, even more so when you step in front of it…

…that’s when a ghoulish apparition appears! This ghastly reaper moves and talks, begging to be let our of his reflective lair.
Grandin Road wants one lucky Design Happens winner to take home this Halloween mirror. To be entered for a chance to win this super cool and creepy Halloween decoration, simply leave us a comment in the field below before 12/11c Monday, August 26.
This week’s question: When you pull out your Halloween decorations, what goes up first?

Decorations going up tomorrow. My grandsons who live with me would love love love this.
Well I don't have any holloween decorations purchased , because we never get any trick or treaters, but to keep with the fun we always carve pumpkins and buy a couple bags of candy just in case someone wanders up our long gravel driveway to our house in the woods. Then I start making fall wreaths for the door, I have to make several as they seem to leave with my friends and family when they come visit, wreath leaves another gets hung.
This is so cool; makes me feel like getting into Halloween this year. My nephew would love this. I take him trick or treating ever year and I enjoy it as much as him. Great prize.
The first Halloween decoration to come out is my black cat with the arched back because it's my little one's favorite.
Halloween is a favorite holiday in our house, heck you could say I don't have a first thing to put up because honestly one shelf in our curio cabinet has a holiday display all year round! We do tend to go overboard, though, inside and out but if I had to pick one of my favorite first things to put out – it would have to be setting up my shelf with lights, black garland and vintage plastic pumpkins that my mother used to hang on a Manzanita tree in out house growing up.
The first things that goes up at our house is the spider webs and paper skeletons on the doorways. The old type of skeletons that you can pose!. I can't wait to have my own haunted house for the kids someday. Every year we get a new decoration. Last year it was a fog machine. We have almost as much halloween decorations as Chrismast Decorations. Halloween is a great time to not be yourself!
My family goes all out for Halloween! It's gotten so crazy that my husband even started a facebook page this year. Creepy Hollow of Mahwah. My kids absolutely love helping us decorate the yard. Although we do not do anything gory (our kids are 9, 4, & 2) we definately spook up the neighborhood! My husband has made most of our decorations; an AMAZING hearse, coffins, wrought iron fencing w/creepy pillars. Most kids that trick or treat at our house bring their parents. It's become a tradition that our family LOVES to share. Happy Halloween everyone!!
Our ghosts playing ring around the rosie in the front yard.
right out front of my house next to the front door the kids will be scared out of their costumes.:D
I love decorating for Halloween, it's so exciting! First out are usually the crows because they are too Halloweenish, but still a little foreboding of spooky things to come.

First to come out is the witch to hang from our entryway light. It's a great way to welcome guests.
Perfect for our foyer~sure to spook our tick-or-treaters~
The first decoration to up for autumn is our pumpkins ….I have several groupings from pottery to white ones…we put them in different rooms. A few weeks later we bring out the big purple light up haunted house…love it! It would be great in front of the animated mirror…my 44 year old son and I were looking on the website while he was home for Labor Day. We were loving the video clips of all the animated items! But the mirror was our absolute favorite!!! Loved the long white dress also!!!!
I've always loved Halloween as it is a purely FUN holiday. And since my husband and I got married, it's twice as much fun as his birthday is October 31st!
Pumpkins go out first
Hello my pretties,
The first decoration to be displayed is my animated Dracula figure. He's finely dressed in a satin suit and cape and after being cooped up in his box for a year, he's eager to wave his arms and the skull he holds in his hand. His eyes have a bright reddish yellow glow that scares even the bravest soul. So , if you happen by my house this Halloween night, be afraid, be very afraid. And, if I ask you to look in the mirror I've just won….get ready to be scared, very scared ! Have a spooktacular Halloween all of you goblins, both big and small !!!
A flying witch to hang off the tree.
This is a very cool Display I would love to add this to my collection of Halloween props I love to decorate for Halloween and this would be a perfact addition. Happy Haunting!
We put up orange lights on the two columns in front of the house. It really brightens everything!
Okay so I started to decorate yesteday and my Black Cat came up missing….very rude of him to run away just when I need him to complete the scene!!
The autumn colored leaf garland is the first Halloween decoration to go up. As the holiday gets closer I add skulls, black cats & pumpkins.
I put it all up at once. I like the "overnight haunted house" result. We have a lot of big stuff from the Scare Factory because my husband knows somoene who works there and lots of other scary stuff. I loved being scared as a kid and I try to return the favor on Halloween. : )
The pumpkins go up first…they represent fall and stay up for the whole season.
I love the mirror. That would be great for our annual Halloween block party. I like decorating the house with fall colors and leaf garland.
The 7' coffin for the front picture window is the first thing we put up. Then we place Beetlejuice and his headless bride, the preacher and all of their ghoulish friends. The mirror would be a totally cool addition to the setting.
The first Halloween decorations I pull out are my stash of costumes. This year I'll be Medusa, so perhaps I can recycle some older costumes to build the new one! I'll need lots of SNAKES!! As for decorating the house, I start collecting pumpkins for the porch…
door and window sticky's
The first thing that I put up is my mini tomb-stone lamps. But I always keep a skull lamp out year round. Then later the candy gets placed around the apartment.
I have five trees in my front yard that I make webs that intertwine between them. The webs are hand made from yarn to look like GIANT REAL WEBS. Every year they get made from scratch. To go with my giant 4FT HAIRRY SPIDER that hangs from the biggest tree. And thats just a start @my house. Every year I pick a theme to be as close to a haunted house as possible. I start the planing for the next year right after halos night. This year im doing the exorcist. Right down to the pea soup vomit. I even use stuff from my taxidermist sister to make things more real. But it always starts with the webs. Thats my trade mark.
The first thing that goes up is the candy bowl!!!! Filled with Candy Corn or some other Halloween treat.
It is skeleton that does a creepy laugh when people put their hand in. So that way when everyone comes into our home they will always have a sweet suprise waiting for them. (It usually scared the poo right out of people because they aren't expecting a candy bowl to make noise.) Happy Halloween!
This is my first Halloween in my new home! So excited to decorate! What to do first? Buy the stringy cobwebs for the bushes out front and then the pumpkins, of course!
The first thing up is the first thing out of the decoration box… which generally is whatever was the last thing to go in last year… wish I could be more specific but it really depends upon how things were packed away…
Usually it is the bats and spiders and skeletons at the front entry. My husband is the big Halloween decorator. He does half the driveway and most of the front yard. He's just a big kid about Halloween, and loves seeing peoples expressions when it's time for trick or treat! This mirror would be such a great addition for him.
halloween flag and solar lights
Orange rope lights with massive amounts of cobwebs on our front porch are the first things we put up to start off our favorite holiday. We all enjoy warm apple cider and make an evening of it. If I win the mirror it may stay up permanently just for my entertainment…sometimes you just have to amuse yourself!!
Just got my Halloween stuff out today. Already put up the hanging skeleton hat screams to be let out of its cage. Had to show the kids:)
Halloween never leaves our house… new skulls & skeletons are added year-round. However, the first things out of storage is always the spooky green skeleton lights that go in the front window & a black, bug-covered wreath for the front door.
~ the first decoration i display is a small knick knack tomb stone…and on it reads " I told you i was sick"
I take out all the goulish candle holders and candles at the beginning of October. It's a great way to ease into the Halloween mood as well as smell the scent(s) of autumn.
The first thing that goes up is my halloween wreath!!
IT WOULD BE MY FALL LEAF WREATH WITH A BOW I MADE ON THE TOP
A witch that flies into the wall!
First thing I like to set up are small foam skeleton heads on the ends of the leafless rose bushes here in SoCal. (We can get away with not Pruning the stems until after Halloween) It's subtle, but I think the honey branches with thorns go perfectly with the large bud-sized skulls on the ends.
When putting up my Halloween decorations, I always begin with my lights. That way I can layer the rest of my decorations. I think this helps with adding depth to everything else. I love decorating for Halloween. Next year I would love to decorate my entire garage and make it into a haunted house for the neighborhood children. Happy Halloween
Looking forward to illuminating the back yard with ghosts and pumpkins. Halloween kicks off the holiday season.
