It’s Banned Books Week, and libraries and bookstores across the US are holding events that raise awareness about censorship and celebrate the freedom to read. (Fun fact: According to the American Library Association, books that I’m a fan of — Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series — were among the most challenged titles of 2010.) In honor of the celebration, here are some giant book stairs that I fell in love with on Pinterest.

Turns out that this is a busy parking garage in Greenville, SC, and the stairs were sponsored by The Greenville Literacy Association to promote their annual book sale. (The tactic must have worked, because apparently they raised $127,000 in 8 hours!)
I especially like the inclusion of The Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird, but I wish more of my faves, like The Great Gatsby, were represented. What books would you showcase on a set of stairs?

I'd want some of my favorite titles from high school required reading, as well as the books my mother would read to us on family road trips: Alice in Wonderland, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, Swiss Family Robinson. Plus, The Prince of Tides.
Never heard of Hans Brinker! I'm going to have to look that one up…
This is awesome. I would totally have this done in my "forever" home…. once I have a "forever" home! Books make me happy.
I would like to have "The Hobbit" by J R Tolkien, "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Shakespeare.. "The Beauty Myth" by Naomi Wolf, "Anne of Greene Gables" by L.M. Montgomery, and a really great Sci Fi book, but I can't decide amongst them all.
Brilliant with a capital B! So many fave books hard to pinpoint just a few. However, I can see this idea being utilized in the home with all kinds of themes…favorite quotes, favorite places traveled, favorite musical artists. I could go on and on. Thank you so much for sharing!

I like the idea of quotes — song lyrics, too!
This is a wonderful idea! I think I would leave the treads the same color all of the time but change the titles on the risers seasonally to suit my mood. I would choose mystery novels for fall (Arthur Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, etc.) and definitely Charles Dickens for winter because he always makes me think of Christmas. Maybe novels by someone like Barbara Pym, Jane Austen, or the Brontё sisters in the spring for stories about life and love in an English village. For summer I would go for novels set in exotic locales because travel comes to mind at that time of year — Frances Mayes' novels about Tuscany, Peter Mayles' books on Provence, and possibly even Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, because those poor Beaudelaire children do seem to travel quite a bit, although never with good results!
Totally creative ideas! I do love a good fall mystery and Sherlock Holmes is a fave of mine, too.
Great picks, all. I think some Shakespeare would have to be in mine, too, but that's another hard choice.
This is so amazing. I love the continuation of the book's cover on each stair, too. I would almost feel bad walking on them!
I have a decorating problem, I have not seen a solution for in all my perusal of HGTV. I have 22 foot ceilings in a somewhat contemporary / traditional house. I'd like to use molding on the walls, but they are not all the same level due to roof design. Does anyone have an idea? I've looked eat this for 7 years and just can't figure it out. Kathy
