It took me a long time to understand the allure of metallic home accessories. I’ve always been a silver girl myself, never going towards the glittery gold or brass hues, feeling they were a little to brash. However, over the last few years tones like gold, brass, copper and silver have exploded in home decor. I’ve finally come over to the metallic side of things, having my own little Kelly Wearstler moment at home. I’ve tuned into the ability of metallic hues to lift and energize a space. In my own beige interior, golden tones have been making an appearance to spice up the boring paint palette (beige was my landlord’s choice, not mine). And paired with today’s most exciting hues like navy blue, purple and pink, metallics can make a real design statement at home.

Here are some of my favorite metallic pieces. You can explore the rest on my Pinterest board.

I’m a fan of antique brass pieces for their vintage feel. The Meurice Mirror by Jonathan Adler is so sophisticated. The bamboo metal would look stunning against a dark black or navy wall.

Accessories like this Globo di Luce Pendant show how beautiful modern copper pieces can be. In a simple neutral interior, this bold light fixture is sure to illuminate with great flair.

An Aluminum Wood Side Table from West Elm showcases the elegant the mix of silver and dark chestnut. It’s the perfect piece for a little rustic-glamour.

Color Crush - Metallics - Native Union

My favorite golden accessory has to be this Gold POP “phone” from Native Union. I spotted it while at Maison et Objet in Paris last month and completely fell in love. It can introduce a fun, old-fashioned way to talk on your smart phone and also works as a speaker so you can have a blast listening to your iTunes! I just love the luxe golden finish. It would be the ultimate fashion accessory in my home office.

  2. You might try taking a look at the world of fine art patchwork quilts to be found on the Web site for Studio Art Quilt Associates at http://www.saqa.com. Recent years have been witness to a veritable explosion of metallic paints and other light reflective embellishments in patchwork wall hangings, any one of which could set the tone for more metallic accessories as well as an overall color scheme in the home.

For my quilt "The Future is Now," commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya, I used silver dupioni silk for a background to a Nairobi skyline which depicts the fall of used computer components (spray painted for extra metallic gleam) through the sky and settling in the "mabati" (corrugated metal roofing) topped slums below the city. Included in the piece were rings of Kitengela Glass (you can Google that, too), silver sequins, beads, and some plastics as well as real computer parts. The only hint of color was a single holographic ribbon which gave such an elusive effect that it appeared merely part of the reflected light.

You can see this quilt in the sidebar of my blog if you care to look. I'm keeping eyes open for an opportunity to work with old cds . . . ;)
