Today is the first day that HGTV Magazine is on newsstands! Did you get yours yet? I’ve gotten mine and I have to say, it’s one of the prettiest and most useful design magazines I’ve ever seen (even if I am a little biased).

In its inaugural issue Vern Yip, judge for HGTV Design Star lets readers into his family’s home in Atlanta, Georgia to get a look at his unbelievable dog room (page 35 in case you’re following along with your magazines). With four dogs and two young kids in the house, it’s hard to believe that anything is organized, but this chocolate-colored room is perfection. I recently talked to Vern about his home and his article for our brand new magazine. Here’s what he had to say:

LZ: Have you seen the magazine yet?

VY: No, not yet! But I’m very excited to see it.

LZ: So we know you’re an old pro at being in other people’s homes with the cameras rolling, but what was it like to be interviewed for the magazine having the photographers at your house?

VY: It’s always good. Your home should be a physical manifestation of you. It’s a way for people to experience who you are. It was fun to share my personal style with readers.

LZ: In your article for the magazine, you show us your fantastic pet room just off your kitchen. What do you suggest people do who don’t have enough space to make a separate room for their pets?

VY: I’ve always been a dog person, but I haven’t always had a dedicated room for the dogs. Before having this room, I didn’t compromise between practicality and not having a dog at all, though. A couple of tips for keeping a clean and neat house:

Number one: get a great vacuum cleaner, and number two, look at the materials that your dog comes in contact with – the floor, the upholstery – and make sure you select those correctly to be soil and stain resistant.

To corral the clutter, use the same the same ideas you would in dealing with clutter in general. Instead of having a coffee table, use a storage ottoman. The lid flips open and you can quickly put away dog toys and leashes.

LZ: What’s your number one rule about the dogs in your house? No people food? No jumping on the couch?

VY: I wish I was that kind of disciplinarian with them! Before we had kids they had the run of the place. The one thing I don’t do, we don’t allow our dogs in our beds. It’s one area that I like to keep super clean and tidy.

LZ: Given that you’ve got pets and kids in your house now, are there any design decisions you’ve made wish you could do over? Do you make different choices now?

VY: No. My choices aren’t primarily driven by dogs or kids. Our decisions are reflections of us and who we are. Successful design is a confluence of function and aesthetics. It needs to function on a high level. I need to be able to sit on the sofa and not worry about getting a stain on it. That’s who I am. You can have great looking things that are also practical.

LZ: OK, Vern, lightning round. I’m going to ask you a question, and you give me your gut reaction:

Dogs playing poker – kitsch and cute, or tacky and awful?

VY: Kitsch and cute.

LZ: Painted animal portraits – yea or nay?

VY: Yea!

LZ: Dogs in the bed – snuggle up or get out!

VY: Get out!

LZ: Leather furniture and pets – for sure or forget it?

VY: For sure!

LZ: And last but not least: I know I’m not supposed to ask this – because dogs are like kids – but do you have a favorite dog?

VY: [Laughs] Yes, I do! I’m so embarrassed to admit that. But I can’t tell you which one it is!

What a great interview — I'm going to have to get a copy of the magazine just to see Vern Yip's dog room! Thanks for this!

Ha, I love that Vern admits to having a favorite dog, but won't reveal which it is! Spoken like a good pet owner.

I'am a HGTV addict. I'am very dissapointed that they took the show THE RENT off great hostess, great show miss it alot. I know that this has nothing to do with Vern Yip but Iwanted to get my thought's out to HGTV. Thanks

I just love Vern. That picture of him hugging his dog gives me the warm and fuzzies.

I love this little interview. Short and covered a lot. I have seen rooms dedicated to cats, and although I am allergic to cats, and do like them I was NOT impressed. Looking forward to seeing this dog room. My daughter is trying to get me to go shopping with her in the next hour. First purchase is your new magazine. Leather furniture a must with pets. Don't ask me how many pieces of leather furniture pieces are in my home. elizabeth

I love this interview — especially the lightening round — but I'm not sure I agree with Vern re. the painted animal portrait. Maybe if it was pop art?

I did, however, love his uber-organized treat jars in the magazine and the unlimited supply of tennis balls. My dog must just die if he saw it!

If it is a tasteful portrait of a beloved pet, then why not. I have a pastel of my most favorite late dog and it is proudly displayed in my guest room. It looks great and everyone comments about my beautiful dog. He was much loved and after several years, he is still missed by the family.

Where kind I purchase HGTV Magazine now (10/17/2011), not subscription, but an actual magazine on the newsstand? I have called Barnes and Noble and they do not have it.

Is anybody else as sick of the House Hunter marathons as I am? That seems to be the only thing on HGTV in the evenings, except Saturdays. I would like some design shows in the evenings during the week.

    • Gail says:

HGTV was in the top 10% of my limited television viewing until this spate of "House Hunter" programs. There is nothing of design interest, either home or garden, on this station in the evening any longer with the exception of Wednesday. The Rent was the only "house" hunter program that dealt with design issues along with great advice on where/when/how to rent responsibly. "Love it or List it" is a good concept/teaching show.

Yes, yes and YES!! My whole reason for watching HGTV, was to learn about design, watch great designers at work, learn about home renovations and to at the very least, have some kind (SERIOUSLY, ANY KIND), of a variety of shows to watch! Let's have more Design on a Dime, Divine Design, Color Splash, Curb Appeal, Design to Sell, and so on! Seriously….who the heck cares about, House Hunters?! The ratings must have seriously dropped because I cannot even tell you how m,any of my friends have basically gave up on ever watching HGTV again.

  15. Rusti Jo Malone says:

Yikes! It should have been, "many of my friends have basically given up". :D <–big toothy grin.

  16. Rusti Jo Malone says:

Well we can just give Cher's comment a BIG TWO-THUMBS UP! Also, four-snaps in a Z formation. I am seriously so pleased to learn that my friends and I, aren't the only ones who think that HGTV, should not have wall to wall House Hunters, episodes. Wall to wall carpet however, is fine. Okay I promise I'm done. :)

  17. Gail says:

I purchased a 1970s raised ranch which hasn't been touched since 1970. I desperately need help with design on a very, very limited budget. The kitchen is barely functional, downstairs bathroom flooded entire downstairs, lr fireplace is an entire wall of color treated bricks, "deck" is falling apart….too many issues to enumerate. I really enjoy watching/listening/learning from the masters. Income property, Property Brothers, and Kitchen Cousins explain issues and offer options. Who could forget Mike Holmes! What I would give to have him tell me not only what is honestly wrong with my home (5 contractors gave different responses to fireplace, water tank and furnace conditions), the order of precendence, and what I might be able to safely tackle DIY. Let's not forget Jamie D./John Gooding work their landscape magic.

Love love love House Hunters! I gather alot of ideas just from looking at different houses.also prperty brothers are great. All that show is about is ideas and how to use your imagination!aIm not tired of it at all.cant wait until i get home after a very stressful day at work to just be able to sit down and watch £House Hunters and dream a little dream! Thanks hgtv.
