If you’re a regular reader of The Bloggess (aka Jenny Lawson), you know she’s capable of turning ordinary things into pure gold with her irreverent words. But check out what she can do with her hands: Turn an ordinary dollhouse into pure haunted Halloween gold.

bloggess haunted dollhouse

She’s been outfitting this dollhouse for ten years with creepy miniatures inspired by horror and fantasy books. The details are all very crafty, as Jenny “built, sculpted, or antiqued most of the stuff” that fills the rooms. For my favorite piece, the Ouija board (top left), she reduced a photo she had taken of a real Ouija board, and painted it to make it look appropriately worn. What literary allusions can you spot in the house? I saw some spot-on Harry Potter references, Neil Gaiman nods and Hitchcock props. Check out all of the spectacular photos here.

This is amazing! I would never have the patience for a project like this. The metal spiral staircase reminds me of the one in the original version of "The Haunting" with Julie Harris — I've always wanted a spiral staircase, but not one like that!

I have pored over these pictures, I can't get enough! I love the dismembered hand under the cloche.

This is amazing. I feel like I need to inspect every inch! I love the skeletal dog by the bed and little details like the tarot cards she spent forever cutting out.

Shame on you, HGTV, for featuring a blogger who is a disrespectful potty mouth. She badmouths Jesus. She makes fun of people. She is not very nice. Why would you feature her? Just to get some of her traffic? Tacky. Just tacky. Its almost as bad as partnering with Dooce just to get some twitter followers.

Shame on you for not knowing what the hell you are talking about. Have you read any of her story? She doesn't just "make fun of people". If you got off your high horse long enough to find out about her, you would learn that she is the voice and face of mental illness and severe depression. Her way of talking about and dealing with her depression has saved other lives.

  13. On the other hand, I think Jenny is wonderfully creative and hilarious. I'm impressed by the tiny, detailed work.

I adore Jenny's irreverance and think her haunted dollhouse is perfectly acceptable for HGTV to highlight. Nobody has to read her blog.

    Who the heck is Dooce????

    This house is incredibly AMAZING!

  16. Jessica says:

Um … they featured Jenny because she's brilliant. Sorry Jesus got his feelings hurt.

I'm wondering why there are no "related posts" to such a thing. What? Is Jenny the only one who makes fabulous dollhouses and writes fantastic crap?!

Oh wait. She probably is. Well played, HGTV.
