Short and sweet: I am absolutely buried lately between planning a temporary move cross-country to begin pre-production on an HGTV series and wrapping up my own clients in Atlanta. Amidst the short-on-time-ness of it all, I’ve become an avid user of Overstock.com. It may sound silly, but I had no idea that you can actually buy pretty much everything in the world on this site.
As I’ve been sourcing pieces for my own private clients and for HGTV.com makeovers, I’ve found that many of the styles I’m looking for in trade-only showrooms are actually available on Overstock.com at a fraction of the price. Um, yes please. Anyhow, I took note of some of the items I’m using and/or have recently used and am filling y’all in on some great stuff to consider if you’re putting together rooms on super tight budgets or if you wanna splurge on that one statement piece without going custom. Now, if I could only find an Audi A4 Wagon repairman on Overstock.com, I may be one step closer to trekking across the country.
If you can’t afford the Eames rocker, go for the next best thing, Vinnie Cradle Chair in blue. At just under $140, you can’t go wrong with this piece. Think of it as an investment, similar to those Beverly Hills ladies with new, puffy lips but without the plastic surgery or recovery period afterwards.
While a Parsons desk may not be the most inventive thing in the world, hell, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This basic, simple style of desk has been around for centuries and it’s never going out of style. Overstock’s version is under $150, is purdy darn easy to assemble if you are familiar with screws and screwdrivers, and mixes well with just about every design aesthetic out there.
You know that Madeline Weinrib zig-zag rug which just about every retailer on earth has kinda-sorta or blatantly ripped off? Well, Overstock has their own version which is significantly different in scale, Alexa Chevron. Something I plan to do with these (like, for real, in 13 days to be exact) is sew two of them together to completely cover a long, narrow Brooklyn living room with what appears to be wall-to-wall floor covering.
Yep, there’s lighting on Overstock, too. Some of their pendants rival those found only in trade-only showrooms such as the Indoor 3-Light Black Pendant Chandelier. Wow, that name is super uncreative; however, the price is amazeballs. Sold!
If you were contemplating going big with a custom, architectural queen-size platform bed and spending a sick amount of cash to bring it home, well don’t. Overstock’s got it covered. The Ludlow sports a tufted headboard made from leather and an espresso wood finish. Impress your friends: Tell them your bed is custom, then say it was purchased with your custom credit card online at Overstock.
You know how shelter magazines make the homes they feature seem lived in thanks to great prop stylists? Well, while the way they position throws to look perfectly imperfect baffles me (although I am pretty darn good at styling), that little touch—with all of its texture—really makes a huge difference in creating a welcoming feel. Check out the Oxford Decorative Throw Blanket in its array of colors. And after you purchase it, let me know how many hours it took to make it look perfectly imperfect. NOTE: Speaking from experience, this is bound to drive you crazy.
