Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year

pantone 2012 color of the year tangerine tango design blog hgtv design happensIt’s that time of year again. Pantone just released their Color of the Year for 2012: Tangerine Tango.

This vivacious, reddish orange hue was chosen for its radiating passion and natural warmth – two characteristics that occur when you marry red and yellow. In the coming year, we can expect Tangerine Tango “to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.” This bold color evokes a feeling of heat, drama and exoticism, while still coming across as comfortable and friendly. During the cold and dreary months of December, I was wondering if I would see this color in stores, on the runways or in interiors, but I’ve seen it EVERYWHERE.

Tangerine Tango looks stunning in every room setting (as an accent color or splashed on the walls), on every skin tone and on just about every product and accessory you can think of. I’m crazy for this bold beauty, can’t you tell? It looks like I need to alter my Christmas wish list…

Designer Shelly Riehl David shows how much of an impact Tangerine Tango can make in this small sitting area. Aqua walls help create a balance of cool and warm components next to the chair, while additional hints of tangerine on the wall prints help tie the entire look together.

The best way to spice up an all-white space is to add Moroccan leather poufs in tangerine, of course. Pulled from the rug’s intricate pattern, the tangerine pieces provide just the right amount of vigor. (Don’t you just love that pouf?)

Or you can be completely daring and take it to the walls:

Designer Jaymes Richardson suggests using your favorite color (Tangerine Tango, maybe?) for key pieces to make the color feel more special. Plus, the room will instantly feel more vibrant and energetic with the integration of a bold, new hue.

Not only has tangerine been popping into interiors, but it’s been lighting up the runways, too. Fashion designers from Tommy Hilfiger to Elie Tahari are incorporating this striking color into their spring collections.

And what did I tell you? It looks beautiful on everything, doesn’t it? Pillows, sunglasses and even kitchen utensils are coming out in this shade of orange.

I prefer this color used as statement pieces when its magnetic energy and warmth can really shine.

  3. I wanted to pick a color for my bathroom. I was feeling this color, but was still flipping through the shades when I decided to double check 2012 colors and this shade popped up. It was the one in my head. Looks like I was on target all along.

  6. How would a kitchen look in this color? Quite a large kitchen for this day and time. Hardwood floors, medium in color. Cabinets are a cream/white color. Any suggestions?

    • I think that would be stunning. It would be warm, comfortable and instantly inviting. Definitely the perfect complement to cream cabinets.

  11. This is a great color; have loved the bitterweet family for 40 years. Getting ready to paint the soffit in my kitchen close to this tangerine shade. I lived with carpet and walls in living room this color for 20 years. Now it is coming back, and it goes with my aqua decorating accents. Everything old is new again.

  14. Awesome, vibrant color! Upon first look, thought it was red (my favorite). Would love to use it but I have a lot of red in my home, even the couch. I do have 1 bedroom with a bland pallet, and haven't decided how to decorate it.

  15. This color had me at "Hello"! Hot colors work like laser pointers or exclamation marks. They are the perfect vehicle for guiding the eye around the room – a great tool for designers!

  16. I'm 76 years old. Would you believe that orange was the color I used for accent in my new home in 1960? I had walnut furniture, white walls and orange side chairs, pillows, drapes, a vase, etc. What goes around – comes around – - – fifty plus years later!

  17. I'm crazy about this color! Looks like one of the vibrant hues used on the beautiful CSI sets.

  18. A little works. Too much is too bright for my home and for my skin. Cannot see myself wearing this in any way, shape or form. All you see is the clothing on the models. The person is totally lost in the blinding color.

  19. i looove this color. will paint my dining room with it. the dark furniture against the colorful wall will be stunning.
