Daily Delight: Australian Bungalow With a Split Personality

I wish I had seen this amazing Adelaide, Australia bungalow on Dwell‘s site earlier this week, say, Thursday, which was Australia Day. But alas. (I only knew Thursday was Australia Day because my calendar said so, and then the Australian meat pie stand near my office was slammed. Also, Dwell‘s newsletter didn’t come out until Friday and some coworkers tipped me off to this, so there’s no way I could have put it together in time. Anyway, next year I’ll be more prepared, Australia!) Even though it’s not on the thematically-appropriate Aussie holiday, you have to admit that this half-Victorian, half-modern home is still pretty impressive.

The article that features this abode is called “Party In the Back”, which I appreciate on the “haha, that’s a mullet joke” level, but it really does describe the place well. While it still maintains a traditional facade in the front, the rear is all light and windows, with a long, gorgeous backyard pool to boot. As far as I’m concerned, this lovely design is just one more good thing to come out of Australia. (See also: Hugh Jackman.)

  1. Oh my gosh that's crazy!. I love it. You get the best of both worlds. Classic vintage and modern fun.

    • It's pretty unique, isn't it? You'd never guess it would look like that from the street! Glad you enjoyed the pick. :)

  3. Is that a hole in the floor? What keeps you and objects from falling through?

    • If you click through the photo gallery, they tell you that it's "a glass top on his subterranean wine cellar" — and the way it opens sounds really cool, too. (It's push-button!) You can read more here.
