Laundry rooms are all-too-often neglected spaces in the home, aren’t they? Sure, the laundry room might serve a purely utilitarian purpose, but function can be beautiful, too – right?
Right! Remember just a few short months ago when I shared our laundry room (almost!) makeover? We’ve been slowly but diligently working away on the space, and thanks to our renovation checklist, we’ve made an organized effort to finish over the next few weeks. First on the list? Tackling our custom vanity, which included a DIY concrete countertop project. And although we’ve worked with concrete before (remember the concrete mantel in our dining room?), we were super nervous to construct something so… intimidating. After all, a countertop needs to be both durable, functional, and (preferably!) beautiful.
And guess what? I think we achieved all three! This tutorial at DIY Network made the project much less intimidating and far more do-able than any instructions we could ever muster, so take a peek if you’re in the mood to try your hand at concrete countertop crafting. We’ve got a few photos of our process below, but for now, let me show you the rest of the vanity!:
We chose painted wood planks for the base to allow for plenty of storage inside. After all, detergents, toilet paper and miscellaneous supplies don’t generally make for the prettiest objects to display, right? And those leather pulls? We upcycled a spare belt to make custom straps that really warm up the vanity (simply fold the leather to create loops, drill a hole, then secure with pop rivets!). I love how the concrete and leather textures provide natural elements for the otherwise white, minimal room.
What do you think? We’re in love with the vanity and can’t wait to complete the rest of the laundry room so we can share the final makeover! Next on the laundry room to-do list? Building custom doors (look for those custom leather belt pulls again!) for our shelving, installing that random toilet paper holder (why has this taken so long?!) and hanging a mirror and statement lighting to dress up the space. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but for now – here are those countertop DIY photos I promised!:
Easy enough, right friends? Stay on the lookout for the final laundry room makeover very soon – until then, do you guys love your laundry room? Have you taken any measures to make this utilitarian area more beautiful, or are you perfectly happy with it as a purely functional space? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
