In previous months, we’ve introduced you to colors that you may not have previously considered using in your home. Grapecopper and coral were big hits; however, pink champagne and mint green received mixed reviews. We think we’ve hit on a color for May that’s definitely trending, can be used either as a neutral or as a dramatic punch of color and is undeniably timeless.

Wanna know what it is?

Navy Blue!

navy, may color of the month1. once wed    2. frisson

”Navy is a classic color, but because it’s so versatile and plays well in almost any palette, it somehow manages to feel fresh and new season after season. It can be masculine, traditional, preppy, eclectic  — anything you want it to be. Of course, there’s the patriotic connection if you want to take it in that direction with stars and stripes, but as you can see from these images, it’s so much more than that.” —Briana Mowrey, Senior Editor

“I always thought of navy as being too dark, but it actually adds just the right pop of color. It can go vintage, coastal or mod, and it’s a reminder of the beachy months of summer to come.” —Farima Alavi, Assistant Editor

navy, may color of the month1. Scot Meacham Wood   2. Emily Henderson for hgtv.com

“Since my first peek at Emily Henderson’s brand-spanking-new navy blue office, I’ve been obsessed with this color. I’m dying to own a navy velvet sofa, or maybe do a navy tile backsplash in the kitchen, or oooh…maybe the perfect pair of navy wedge sandals. Too much? I’m crazy for navy.” —Marianne Canada, HGTV Home Studio

navy, may color of the monthDiane Bergeron Interiors

“I have a navy blue accent wall in my home. Guests are always complimenting me on the color and seem impressed that I ‘went so bold.’ I don’t consider it that daring, but it’s definitely an attention-getter.” — Grant Dudley, Programming Manager

navy, may color of the month1. Serena and Lily    2. Anthropologie

“Navy is timeless, but it also feels oh so right now. (Exhibit A: I’m wearing navy as I type this, and I wore it 2 days last week!) Update the classical nautical pairing of navy and crisp white with a touch of Pantone’s color of the year, Tangerine Tango. Or outfit a vintage setee with swaths of navy, white and cornflower blue for a modern pattern evocative of just-breaking waves.”  —Liz Gray, Senior Editor

navy, may color of the month1. West Elm    2. Brian Patrick Flynn for hgtv.com

”Navy blue is often categorized as hueless, like black. But I must say, navy blue is most certainly a color and a lovely one at that. It took me a while to realize it, but it’s one of the most versatile colors out there. It’s classic, sophisticated and virtually timeless. But what I love most are its current pairings with this season’s must-have colors: hot pink, Kelly green, coral, turquoise and those vibrant neons. Yum!”—Kayla Kitts, Assistant Editor

What kind of help are you looking for? I believe the first step would be to waterproof the space. If you can't afford to do that right now I would wait before putting any more time or money into the space. A seasonal creek in one's basement is never a good selling point…

Navy is my most favorite color. I wear it often and have two rooms painted in it in my house. I would love to have more but think I've already over done it. But can you over do it? Not!!!

Have a 60's ranch style with very light walnut hardwood panelling throughout. All of my delft and cobalt accents go well, but I've considered doing concrete stained floors in the kitchen, dining and living area. (Easier with the dogs!) Just wondering what a dark blue or marbled floor might do to the space, i.e. look bigger or smaller?) Have light furnishings throughout. Any ideas?

  11. Jessica says:

I LOVE navy blue, but for some reason, I am hitting a road block with the majority of pics above…to me they all remind me of the typical sailor/boat/hamptons theme. I think I would pair Navy with more modern furniture and maybe like a deeper burnt orange color? ldk…I love how rich the color is tho!!

Right on! I love navy and terra cotta. I think I will use that in my living room. Gerry

  12. My concern I love this navy blue and the mix with the others colors.
It always look pacefull at any time. About the stairs are they painted??

  13. Gerry says:

I am decorating a living room and want to take the colors off of a picture of lily pads that have shades of navy, royal blue, and deep aqua, with some white and pink. The carpet is a medium tan color, and I would like to have semi-sheer drapes with shades underneath as the room faces south. I like more of a cottage look. Does anybody have any suggestions as to wall color. I am thinking of getting a navy sofa.

  14. Mleeps says:

Love love love navy. I'd put it in every room if I could.

  15. cynthiau says:

Blue is nice. I can't really relate. I'm an orange/red/green person. I'll wait til next months color before I get excited….love the coral for the month of April. cynthia

  16. SouthernBell says:

I like the Navy, but I like the softer blues better. It does need to be paired with white or a very light gray.

  17. Carolyn Ansley says:

What a lovely blue and white concept! I could just imagine having a color coding theme every six months or every year and buying on colorful curtains in Perth to decorate my home. It's such a fun activity to keep on redecorating once in a while.

  18. Pat says:

I have a navy blue sofa and chair and am ready to re do the room. Cannot afford to purchase new sofa/chair. Would love some ideas on wall color, drapes, etc. Currently using country blue and mauves so sick of it and very outdated. Help!
