It’s officially the dog days of summer, at least it is here at HGTV headquarters. The temperatures have been coming in over 100 degrees and everyone has taken to the air conditioning. When it’s sweltering outside, you probably think of hot colors like Pantone’s Tangerine Tango, or maybe an intense chili pepper red. But this month we’re making a case for what might seem an unusual choice for July: Driftwood Grey.
I know what you’re thinking, grey? For summer? But bear with me. Instead of thinking of stark, cold, wintery tones, picture the weather-beaten, sun-warmed grey of boardwalks and beach houses. We love how it pairs with sunny hues, but it looks equally great set off by neutrals.
Lili’s Driftwood Grey Pinterest board won our team over with its great use of the color, inside and out. When pitching her choice, she summed it up perfectly, “Driftwood grey evokes coastal climates for me, particularly the New England coastline. I think of sunbaked and wind-battered shingles on Cape Cod and gorgeous pieces of water-worn, knotty tree trunks. This is the lighter, breezier cousin of flannel grey and perfect for summer.”
What do you think? Are you feeling Driftwood Grey in the heat of this sultry summer?

I love this color. It also reminds me of Cape Cod. I think there is alot you can do with this color.
Cape Cod is exactly what I was thinking of when I pitched it!
I just loved June, didn't think any other would be better…..I like this one for July, nice choice.
Always have been a grey lover. I have used it all over my house. Good to see all the samples of it.
Grey is a very under-used color. Personally I love it. Also enjoyed looking at the Pinterest board.
What is the brand?
I love gray! Just painted my kitchen a very similar shade. Nice choice!
My family room is this color. To me it has a very calming effect.
Thumbs up, love it!
I am tired of seeing grey. To me it is cold and depressing.
If only my hair would turn THAT grey!
Just painted most of my home interior in a warm grey with peri-ceilng. It is a small mid-century with open floor plan. My bedroom is similar colors but deeper – like sleeping inside of a cloud. Great color to use as backdrop to many vibrante colors I love for accessories and art work. All about a great backdrop to the deep and intense colors that I add into the room.
Looks like taupe grey, putty grey, something like that. Hate those faux spindles in that one pic.
Loving the gray…or is it grey? After seeing, am feeling the likelihood of the color drifting into my house to stay.
Driftwood Grey is actually a color by Martha Stewart, we have it in our dining room. Of all the grey's that exist this one is perfect.
great idea
LOVE the grays! Just did our bedroom in super dark gray, light gray for the office, and medium for the living/dining area. Each room has different accent colors to make them look unique.
h,mmmm..interesting. I am open minded. At first, I think summer…pastels…..turquoise, organge, blueberry blue. But I can take a look at antiques…it is a little depressing..but maybe witha tint of pink with greys in a guest house on a lake house
I love to blow up pictures and either frame them or put them on canvas (now available thru stores like Target!). Get real life experiences on your wall, don't keep buying cheap painted art!
I would not be willing to repaint twice a year to keep up with the seasons.
Grey has so many variations, it can avoid any cause of depression and I agree it can be enjoyed year round, given the right shade, I would consider it an elegant neutral.
To me Tango orange is good for a playroom, but the not a kitchen.
i just saw a show and Meg did a kitchen in tangerine, it got worse, she then went into select what was
once live animal skins to hang on a wall?? Ugh, she lost me then. She didn't want a full skin, she wanted it cut up and sewn? Really Meg. Is that like taking a slab of granite and making tiles for a kitchen island. Awful Show. Would have turned it off but Sabrina was next. Have not seen a good show with Meg.
Meg has some good shows, but, she does go overboard on some stuff. I also LOVE Sabrina!!!!!!!!!! Sabrina has always succeeded and excelled in all her shows, in my opinion. They could do more of Sabrina's shows and less of House Hunters as far as I'm concerned! I can't stomach every night of a full hour of House Hunters…………….come on HGTV – you've had by far better shows that you've either taken off, or put them at times when people just aren't watching TV! What happened to Lisa LaPorta and Designed to sell – there were a lot of good designers on this show – and great ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!! What happened to Cash in the Attic, the show with the designer and cooky husband who redoes homes and has some fabulous ideas?
I love Sabrina and Meg, too. I watch HGTV more than any station, when I get my turn at the t.v. I watch a lot of late night t.v., and have a complaint. It seems like certain shows are run all night, and I can't take watching several 1-hour segments of "Holmes on Homes", for instance. I wish there was more variety in the programs. I also miss some of the older shows. I agree with Janie.
Bring back Decorating Cents, and Color Splash (California}
I would like to see Decorating Cents again, too. And…yes they do have to much of House Hunter's Real Estate searches instead of interior decorating shows.
Yes, they have too much of house hunter i am getting sick of it… actually i dont watch hgtv as i used to.
Im with you Emma. Too much of the same show over and over! It's suposed to be a chanel for creative people and their homes and gardens…so BE CREATIVE in your programing. Or just go ahead and call it TREN "The Real Estate Network"
agree with others that house hunters is getting boring. would love to see decorating cents and design on a dime (new shows)and color splash, with homes from all over the US, and not just miami! also miss the antonio project and curb appeal.
So agree that there are way to many house hunter programs. Bring back design on a dime and white room challenge again. Oh and I like Show House Showdown too
I agree with Emma, Darla and Dee. Sick of real estate shows. A couple are interesting but that is the main programming now. I used to watch Decorating Cents. I got some of my best interior design inspiration from Country Living and Homes Across America. I watched HGTV almost the entire day, everyday and didn't mind watching repeats because that only meant I could find something I missed on the last episode. I rarely, if ever, watch HGTV anymore. HGTV Design Star was fun in the beginning but the winner's shows are usually on at some weird time and honestly, if I have to watch all the real estate type shows its not worth it.
I agreed alday long nothing but moving , renting and buying. This is what ruin America , we need to stay and fix up what we have that is how communities grow together. Please bring back your glory days we need these shows more than ever, My chrildren need to learn how to make what they have useful and beautiful. They need to learn how to shop at thrift shops and flea markets. Stop pandering to the rich, I don't care to see millon dollard listings, get real.
Very good point Peggy! Celebrities are over exposed as it is. Let the focus be on the 'normal, everyday households'. I love watching shows that focus on how to make quick, low cost, simple updates with things that are already at home, thrift store/garage store finds or easy DIY projects.
Totally agree with the others!!! If it isn't House Hunters ad nauseum, it's silly reality shows! I too used to watch HGTV all the time, my family teased me I watched so much…now I rarely do…mostly watch DIY where they do something besides search for apartments in Oslo
Love it. Want it. It is so versatile, and comforting, I got to have it in my new house.
[...] was just cruising around HGTV’s blog and found that their color of the month for July is – you guessed it – gray, although [...]
I agree with u all, I miss Candace, Sarah, but I like to think they are gearing up for a new season for us hint hint hint to hgtv. Miss the quilting shows, don't like them on the pc just too small, I want to sew while I am watching them. diy has taken over for me too. We don't want to see people loosing theirs houses, or people buying houses that have been stripped for ungodly prices,. We want to learn how to do a good job.
My parents had a grey bathroom in the 60s so this color reminds me of my childhood.
Emma Im with you. House Hunters is driving me crazy!!!! But Im loving this months color:)

I wish you could also feature some ideas on upholstered bedheads since I have been wanting to have it changed for quite some time now.
I am just loving that bathroom vanity unit. It almost makes me want to drop by the store and see if I can find one for my own bathroom.
The color would be perfect for our summer home. The cool, relaxing feel of that shade of gray should make the place a lot more comfortable during those hot months of the year.
