Back when I used to work in a big bookstore, I’d often see wood pallets littering the receiving room. Pallets are indeed useful for shipping goods, but their use doesn’t have to stop there. According to Yahoo!, they’re the latest DIY craze with searches for “pallet furniture”, “wooded pallet projects,” and “pallet ideas” spiking. Want to get in on the trend? Take a look at these five fab uses for pallets and see which one inspires you to recycle with style.

SAFETY NOTE: Before crafting with pallets, be aware of the potential hazards like loose boards, bacteria and wood that may have been treated/come into contact with toxic chemicals like preservatives, fungicides and/or pesticides. Pallets can be great in the garden too. Laid flat on the ground, they make perfect planters for strawberries. Fill the spaces between the slats with good amended garden soil, then plant these "rows" with strawberries about 1 foot apart. As the plants grow, the fruit is kept off the dirt because it rests on the slats. Or try a pallet of lettuce with each row a different variety. It's not only healthy and tasty, but looks decorative too.

I'm confused about how the link to the safety adpects of working with pallet wood recommends not using for projects associated with children or food in any way but there's drinking glasses and plates/pans bein stored in some of these projects. Just a little confusing/contradictory.

Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. It can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Thanks.

A wood stain is just what it implies. It is a liquid that stains the wood. It has little or no protective qualities.

  18. zumby says:

A wood finish could be varnish or even paint. In the case of wood that you want the grain to show you use a varnish, penetrating oil (like Danish oil) or paste wax to protect the wood and enhance the look of the stain. There are also many kinds of varnish that can be applied over a stain. The most popular is polyurethane. It comes in both a satin and gloss finish. I do a lot of wood staining and my personal favorite is SolarLux stains. They are non grain raising and are resistant to fading from exposure to UV light. I usually finish with Minwax wipe on polyurethane. It goes on with a clean rag and is very easy to apply and doesn't show brush marks It dries in an hour or so. This means you can apply multiple coats in just one day. Thanks.

I just read a warning about wooden pallets that everyone should think about. Many pallets are contaminated with chemicals and you don't want these on the inside of your house around your family. To be safer only use this wood outdoors.

  23. Murica says:

Not all pallets are treated with chemicals. That link about "pallet myths" is nothing more than your typical 1=all American media slander.

Here's a link on how to spot out the chemically treated pallets.

You can find untreated pallets at distribution centers. They usually throw out. 100s everyday. You can also check out your local recycle plant.

  27. Tara says:

I love reusing pallets. In our basement, the drop ceiling tiles were falling apart. There was no way to make it look good. So we took it down. Now we had a beautiful view of wiring and pipes. We would love sheetrock, but if there was a leak in a water line, or if we wanted to get to the wiring, we would have to cut into the sheetrock. We decided to use pallet boards. We made supports with the longer boards. We ran the wood through the planer, cut in the needed lenghts and slid each board between the supports. It looks like a tongue and groove ceiling. If we need to get to the wiring or plumbing, we just have to lift a couple of the boards out and we are in. The best part of this, other than having a beautiful ceiling is that it was free!

  28. Tara says:

We used pallets to fence in our back yard. Since it is almost a half acre of yard, purchasing a fence would have cost us thousands. Board by board, we now have increased the value of our property and created a safe place for our dogs to run without worry.

  29. Tara says:

We had an ugly drop ceiling in our bedroom. Took it down and nailed planed (hard yellow pine) boards to the ceiling. Beautiful country look. Again, it was free! Our next project is converting the spare bedroom (connecting wall to our room) into a walk in closet with washer & dryer in the same area. Of course, we will be using the free pine pallets for the ceiling and to create shelving. I can't wait!
