To me, fall usually means the start of planning for the holidays. It may be too early for some of you, but they’ll be here before you know it. And with holidays comes entertaining. If you’re playing host this year — but don’t have the budget for new tableware — then this craft is just what you need.

Monogrammed Plate

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • ceramic white plates (from the Dollar Store)
  • pencil
  • a Sharpie in your desired color
  • stencil
  • ruler

Here’s how you do it:

1. Measure for the center of the plate using a ruler. Use a stencil, or freehand your letter using a pencil first, then draw over it with a Sharpie.

Draw Letter

2. Fill in your letter to create a calligraphy effect if you aren’t using a stencil. I used this tutorial as a guide.

3. Add any other designs you’d like, such as polka dots.

Add Polka Dots

4. Bake your plates in the oven at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes to make your designs permanent. Be careful when taking out the plates, and let cool.

Give this project a try, and let us know how it turned out in the comments below.

Haven't tried this, but from reading the comments, it might be necessary to cover with a clear glaze after you write on it with your Sharpie.

Regular sharpies don't work unless you intend your finished product to be solely decorative. If you use oil based sharpies (this is marked on the pen clearly and they are a bit more expensive) you could get away with those on a mug or something, but I would still stay away from using the dish washer.

Did this and loved it. Any mistakes can easily be cleaned up with alcohol and a q-tip.

  5. Does it HAVE to be tin? . Will Aluminum foil work? . if I just have a foil plate instead of an actual sleeve with a flap will that work? . Can i just put all my credit cards right together will they cancel each other out? .

  6. Yeah mike you are right we will not contaminate our food for just this idea. It can hurt our health. Thanks

You need to use OIL BASED SHARPIES, start in a COLD OVEN. When the oven reaches 350, THEN you time it for 30 mins, turn off oven and LET PLATE COOL IN OVEN overnight preferably. If you take the plate out when it's hot the glaze may crack.
