October is National Book Month and other sites would probably tell you to celebrate by reading, but we’re not other sites! I suggest celebrating by reading AND crafting with books! Now, as a bibliophile, I can understand not wanting to alter books in any way, but there are always going to be books that just don’t suit the donation pile (like super-old travel and reference books that have outdated info). At least with these ideas, they can still shine and live on as darling gifts or decor! “But you don’t have to take my word for it…”
This stacked book lamp would make a great (and apropos) reading light, don’t you think? Perch it on a side table near a comfy chair, then snuggle up with your favorite tome and a mug of tea. Get all the instructions from our easy tutorial.
I’m swooning over this gorgeous Kate Spade Wordsmith Dictionary Clutch, and while I’m hoping one of Santa’s little elves might surprise me with it this holiday season, I suppose I could try my hand at my own DIY hardcover book purse in the meantime! If you’re similarly inspired, get tips from our how-to article.
As the clutch above shows, a book can be the perfect place to stash your treasures. The “book safe” is a logical extension of that thought. Hollow out a thick book, tuck small valuables inside and slide the book back onto a big bookshelf for camouflage. Sneak a peek at all the clever examples on Ecofriend.

Speaking of bookshelves, that’s another thing you can make out of books! (I just blew your mind, didn’t I?) Instructables has more details.
Since I’ve been wedding planning, I feel like I’ve seen every kind of planter and centerpiece known to man, but somehow, this planter is new to me. I never imagined putting succulents inside a hardcover, but the good folks at Apartment Therapy can show you how it’s done. Just goes to show you that you should never judge a book by its cover.
