• Tell Your Friends

This is your Designer MacGyver, reporting live from the front lines of Hurricane Sandy in New York City…at least until the power goes out. I hope wherever you are, you’re safe, warm and dry! Since local officials have urged everyone to stay inside, it looks like I may have a lot of time on my hands. I’m stocked up on all the storm essentials so I think I’ll be okay in that sense, but if we lose the Internet and TV, there are only so many games of Scrabble I can beat my fiance at before he’ll want to stop playing. So, DIY by candlelight it is. Thankfully, I’ve got lots of old/single socks at my disposal, and if you do too, let’s get a jump on winter and Christmas crafting, shall we? Sock it to me!

sock vase

This idea from Hostess With the Mostess couldn’t be easier. Have a jolly-looking sock like the striped one in this photo? Have a vase you’d like to dress up?  All you do is cut the foot off of the sock and slide it over the plain vase. Bam! Cheerful centerpiece accomplished.

sock snowman

This adorable winter snowman (from Then She Made…) doesn’t require any flurries — just socks, rice, twine, rubberbands and buttons. Move over, sock monkeys. You’ve got serious competition from Frosty the Sockman.

sock wreath

Yet again, I am impressed by how versatile the humble wreath can be. This time, Emily of 52 Mantels took a basic wreath form and jazzed it up with these striped socks. It’s inexpensive — which comes in handy when you’ve already spent a small fortune on gifts, amirite? — and it can be customized by adding a special holiday touch like the sign here.

sock advent calendar

Don’t forget that baby socks can be craft fodder, too! This sweet baby sock advent calendar from EAB Designs is both festive and fun. What tiny goodies would you tuck inside each sock?

sock ornament

Last, but not least, you can trick out your Tannenbaum with some socks as well. This snowman ornament from Childmade is so simple…well, a child could make it.

Which Christmas craft knocked your socks off? And do you have unusual craft material suggestions for me to take on next week? Leave them in the comments below!
