Here at HGTV.com, we’re already fans of saturated, moody emerald green — we even chose it as our September Color of the Month! So we were thrilled when we heard that color authority Pantone crowned the color its 2013 Color of the Year.
This sophisticated shade has slowly worked its way into fashion and home, from red carpet looks to vibrant home accents. Pantone considered the color’s emotional appeal, too: “Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world,” remarked Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in today’s press release.
One of the hue’s best qualities is its ability to be both luxurious and casual, both modern and classic. Designer Andrea Schumacher gave the classic white kitchen a twist by painting this home’s island an unexpected emerald green and pairing the hue with blue floral wallpaper and Murano glass chandeliers.

Emerald is bold enough to be used as an accent color in a neutral space, like designer Jolene Huitt did here with monochromatic accessories in this high-end bathroom.

But emerald can be more playful, too, when paired with other hues from the green family or friends from across the color wheel like orange and yes, even red. Designer Linda Bergrot created the inspired pattern pairing in this bright, airy living room.

What do you think of Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year choice? How will you use emerald green next year?

I love the green with that blue wallpaper. That was a very good combination choice.
Emerald is one of my very favorite colors, and I am especially digging all the green accents in that last photo!
That makes a lot of sense, since I totally found this via your Pinterest board. I love it, too!
Beautiful palettes! Emerald really is so versatile.
It really is! Can I have the emerald kitchen now?
I love that kitchen so much I want to eat it for lunch!
I made 2 treasuries on etsy around your Emerald Color Of The Year:

Wow, Susan…these are gorgeous! I especially love the 1950s swing coat and the ribbon roses.
Gee, my 1980's kitchen is back in style. Not loving the emerald green: 30 years isn't a long enough break from it.
When we were in the military emerald green was the color I used to make the transition from one white walled house to the other. Green throw carpets, furniture, comforters, greenery. It was a great way to warm up a cold space. However, this color is not for things like kitchen islands. It does not stand the test of time and it is a color that will bring back to many memories of the 80s for most of us.
Sorry, still seems outdated to me, and way too intense to live with. I agree with someone who said this won't stand the test of time. I won't be working it into my french country house, that's for sure!
I wouldn't want it on MY island. At least there's not much to paint when a change is wanted. I do, however, still like my emerald green carpet (darker than the island) from 1998. It's still in great shape – good carpet, good pad – and it doesn't show dirt.
Hate it would only use it as an accent color
Just because they say so, doesn't make it so. Garish. No way around it.
me too…it's a bit much
I have to agree, a little outdated for my taste. How about Mediterranean Blue for the new color, with a splash of reds and yellows?! That's my new favorite….this week anyway! Winter has me wanting for the deep blue seas.
This is one of those colors a few women wear really well, and look fabulous doing it. But even they don't wear it all the time, and it needs just the right jewelry.
On an island or over a large wall, I cannot stomach this color. The two glass bottles would be okay.
Wow…emerald green. Totally 80's!! Could terra cotta and peach be far behind?
I agree Bonnie Lecat. Remember Hunter Green in the 80's? So many people painted their family rooms this color and bought hunter green, burgundy and beige patterened sofas to match. Emerald Green is beautiful in tiny doses.
Any thing is better than that god awful red that was suppose to be popular. Every time I went into a house that had red walls in it I wanted to throw-up! I paint my walls any color I want and have never cared "what is in"
When I was a kid, my mother painted our refrigerator, our washing machine and our freezer emerald green. She liked it so much that she painted her bedroom the same color. Memories………..
It was not emerald green, it was avacado green carpet, with orange furniture and black wrought iron in the 70's
Emerald is richer, warmer and brighter, however the painted island looks to flat, the glass bottles, a glass backsplash seem a better accent for the kitchen, or just wear some emeralds (or emerald colored) jewelry while cooking….sparkle, sparkle.
Emerald Green is one of those colors when placed as an accent stands out beautifully, but placed in small areas as a focal point wear thin very quickly. Paire this color with neutrals, white or black only.
Blues, reds, orange, pink and purple colors paired with emerald green takes me past the 80's and into the 60's and begins to take on a circus type atmosphere. Some of the photos make me want to take a nap.
emerald green…yikes, anyone using it like this must not have lived through the 80's!!
Reminds me of colors we're still trying to update- looks like old photo's- not new. The bottle scene was somewhat attractive, but then again, it was like old pics, not new. I think a lot more thought needs to go into decorating with this color for a fresh new look- not old looks redone the same way.
Been there…done that. Not a new color for me. My mom painted her LR that green in 1952. I painted my kitchen that color in 1980. And I just moved into a condo partly to get rid of carpeting that color. I guess what goes around comes around. I'm hooked on beiges/browns with a pop of turquoise.
Put our moderately dark emerald green carpet in during 1977. Loved it until last year, I became little tired of it. Talk about good carpet, it is still in good shape and never showed soil. I am wondering what will not only wear until I am worn out, but not make me sick after a few year – like the tans, etc. I guess white and emerald are the best choices for me, for now. It is like having Mother Nature's grass inside our home. What could be more soothing. However, now that I am older, I find softer colors becoming more appealing.
All I can say is eeew.
Ditto.
I decorate the way I like & don't worry about what's "in". I have no desire to use this color anywhere. The colors in my home are in cream, periwinkle blue & mauve. I took my inspiration from Monet paintings, who has always been one of my favorite artists, and it has created a relaxing atmosphere to live in, which was what I wanted.
I have lived thru the 80's and always liked emerald green and also lighter shades of green, glad to hear its back.
