Here at HGTV.com, we’re already fans of saturated, moody emerald green — we even chose it as our September Color of the Month! So we were thrilled when we heard that color authority Pantone crowned the color its 2013 Color of the Year.

This sophisticated shade has slowly worked its way into fashion and home, from red carpet looks to vibrant home accents. Pantone considered the color’s emotional appeal, too: “Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world,” remarked Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in today’s press release.

One of the hue’s best qualities is its ability to be both luxurious and casual, both modern and classic. Designer Andrea Schumacher gave the classic white kitchen a twist by painting this home’s island an unexpected emerald green and pairing the hue with blue floral wallpaper and Murano glass chandeliers.

Emerald is bold enough to be used as an accent color in a neutral space, like designer Jolene Huitt did here with monochromatic accessories in this high-end bathroom.

But emerald can be more playful, too, when paired with other hues from the green family or friends from across the color wheel like orange and yes, even red. Designer Linda Bergrot created the inspired pattern pairing in this bright, airy living room.

What do you think of Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year choice? How will you use emerald green next year?

I love the green with that blue wallpaper. That was a very good combination choice.

Gee, my 1980's kitchen is back in style. Not loving the emerald green: 30 years isn't a long enough break from it.

When we were in the military emerald green was the color I used to make the transition from one white walled house to the other. Green throw carpets, furniture, comforters, greenery. It was a great way to warm up a cold space. However, this color is not for things like kitchen islands. It does not stand the test of time and it is a color that will bring back to many memories of the 80s for most of us.

  7. Karen says:

Sorry, still seems outdated to me, and way too intense to live with. I agree with someone who said this won't stand the test of time. I won't be working it into my french country house, that's for sure!

  8. Jean says:

I wouldn't want it on MY island. At least there's not much to paint when a change is wanted. I do, however, still like my emerald green carpet (darker than the island) from 1998. It's still in great shape – good carpet, good pad – and it doesn't show dirt.

  9. Linda says:

Hate it would only use it as an accent color

  10. Jennifer says:

Just because they say so, doesn't make it so. Garish. No way around it.
