Just look at what Jenny Komenda from The Little Green Notebook was able to do with store-bought IKEA bookshelves.

This looks great…would never know they were store bought.
Has to be Ikea, the shelves look like they are bending under the weight!
Perfect.
Great looking bookcase. And clicking on the link, I'm in love with that mirror on the wall.
I used a 5 shelf bookcase on each side of a 5 drawer chest then added a board I stained the same color as the bookcases and chest. To connect the bookcases above the chest I used gold colored L brackets screwed to the bookcases. I thenadded wooden shelf supports (again stained to match bookcases) to the front of the board (I measured the board depth after temporarily putting the shelf supports to the bookcases above the chest. Then measured to get the board depth needed. This made the bookcases and the chest appear to be one built in piece. I put a mirror under the shelf I created with the board (above the chest). It is in my bedroom which is a very small space. (Rental home) This gave me needeed storage and looks very unique.
Sorry, I meant to add to the above comment, that these were all bought as, put it together yourself items just like Ikea. You put the shelf supports in front of the L brackets on the front of the shelf you made (connecter piece). It added a nice decorative finish to the unit.
