Mardi Gras is officially five days away, and people are already heading to party-central cities like New Orleans and Mobile, Ala. to celebrate Carnival in style. Fat Tuesday is all about filling up on rich foods before Ash Wednesday, and we’re going to help you out with that. Who doesn’t love a little (or a lot) of King Cake? Here’s a modern spin on that sweet treat with all the traditional Mardi Gras hues. They’re soft, creamy, colorful and delicious. And yes, you have to hide a baby inside; it’s tradition, of course!

    I made these, following the recipe exactly. They look great but are too sweet. Also, the filling is 3X the amount needed for the shells. So, I have a giant tupperware of too sweet frosting..I've tried store bought macarons and feel the flavored fillings are a better contrast to the shell, than the vanilla. I love the texture of the shells – thin and crisp shell that collapses into smooth creaminess. I'd love to hear comments from others who've made the recipe.
