Update: Congratulations to this month’s random winner, Van. Check back on May 3 for another great giveaway.

Now that spring has finally arrived, the time is right to shake up your decor. Along with new paint colors and spring cleaning to-dos, why not update your home by starting an original art collection? It’s easier than you think — and this month’s giveaway with affordable original art retailer The Tappan Collective can help.

The Tappan Collective founders Jordan Klein and Chelsea Neman started their company to make it easy for art lovers (and art newbies!) to easily find and buy original artwork from emerging artists. One lucky Design Happens reader will win their choice from the three original pieces featured in this post. Read on to enter for a chance to win.

Chefchaouen 2 by Shay Spaniola

Option one is a framed print of this Moroccan city scene (above) captured by photographer Shay Spaniola. Animal lovers might be more drawn to a framed copy of  Will Robinson-Scott’s “Mastiff,” which shows off the bond between a pair of dogs and  their owner.

For those who’d rather fill their walls with whimsy, the third choice is a framed print of Evan Robart’s bright “Popsicles.” Doesn’t it make you think of a hot summer day?

So, what’s the best way to choose? Tappan’s founders say it all boils down to one thing: Choose pieces that give you an emotional response. “I think what we say most is to keep it simple. Don’t be intimidated by the history or what it means; just go with your gut and see what you respond to. Once you start building a collection, you’ll be amazed by the patterns that will emerge,” Chelsea says.

To enter for a chance to win one of these art pieces, leave a comment below. This month’s question: What’s your favorite style of art, or your favorite individual art piece?

Follow The Tappan Collective on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about exciting new artists and building your own collection.

You may only comment once to be considered, and you don’t have to purchase anything to win; a purchase will not increase your chances of winning. Odds depend on total number of entries. Void where prohibited by law. Only open to legal residents of 50 U.S., D.C. or Puerto Rico, and you must be at least 18 years of age to win. All entries (comments) must be entered between 9:00 a.m. ET on April 5, 2013 and 12:00 p.m. ET on April 8, 2013. Subject to full official rules. My favorite style of art right now would have to be pieces by Crisropher Marley. They are out of my price range but I still like to look at them on line and peep at them if they are showing in a store around my area. I love art like the Moroccan City. I love dream pieces and I can stare st that piece for hours.

My favorite style would be anything inspired by Georgia Okeeffe. The early photographs of her hands stop me in my tracks. Her hands were like a sculpture. And she continued painting even when she had lost her eye sight….that is amazing!

I have an eclectic style and am drawn to art the evokes a mood or feeling of calm or discovery. I like art that takes a slightly different look at the things or scenes that surround us, focusing on one aspect of them that we might have missed in our focus on the 'larger picture'.

  4. Jeremy says:

I enjoy art along the veins of Sandy Skoglund – a simple everyday background with a subtle pop of color and/or quirkiness. ;)

  5. cheryl says:

I can't commit to one style of art….for me it's something that speaks to me, evokes a memory, makes me smile, or go "hmmm….that's interesting".

  6. Chris M says:

I'm a big Yves Klein fan (what an imagination that man had!)…but I love anything that draws emotions out of the viewer. I had my wedding in an art museum full of beautiful pieces, of course the one that moved me the most was the Renaissance-period hand-carved mahogany English "Reading Room" that was placed within the space and provided an amazing backdrop for the ceremony.

  7. Tiffany Clarke says:

I love anything beautiful and any piece of art with heart put in it is beautiful from conception.

  8. Lois says:

Anything with interesting views of the ordinary.

  9. mekern77 says:

I love anything that is full color and fun to fill my grey walls.

  10. Jodi Walsh says:

Fun flirty art or powerful talented artists always draw my attention
