Ever wonder how our home editors come up with all those awesome decorating ideas and DIY projects that grace the pages of HGTV Magazine issue after issue?

Staying on trend with all things home improvement and design is our job (pretty cool, we know), but even the experts can get “designer’s block” from time to time. The simple answer to any of our hang-ups? Hello, field trip!

Last week, we hopped on a bus to Brooklyn’s IKEA for a day filled with a mix of work (that didn’t feel anything like “work”), play, and of course, a little shopping. Recognize the light fixture in the right photo? It’s nearly everywhere, including inside the bedroom featured in our latest July/August issue.

After separating into blended groups of editors, writers, crafters, photographers, etc., we were given our assignment: Search the showroom and marketplace floors for new story inspiration. We were to be on the hunt for new design trends, crafty DIY projects, small-space solutions, up-and-coming color combos, and just about anything we could envision inside HGTV Magazine. What did we want to share with our readers? What were our favorite items and installations at the store? And what did we think you would fall in love with, too?

We found inspiration everywhere — even from our fashion. If your shirt matches the bed, you have to test it out, right? Who says research can’t be fun?

Teams presented their top five concepts, and let’s just say, you can look forward to some pretty ingenious ideas in the coming issues. I would have loved to have been on your field trip with you! I have a great suggestion for you for color inspiration.. check out the Color911 app! It is great for instant help with color but I use it in quite a few ways.. all great for inspiration! First of all you can create your own palettes of color to use whenever you decorate. What I have great fun with is photographing something I like.. even from IKEA.. could be anywhere, and pulling the colors from the photograph to add to my palette. It is a great way to start any design. Another great feature is that the app comes with 60+ color themes, each with its own look. You can easily look through all of them and find your inspiration there. It's really fun to use…Color911. I highly recommend it!
